Robert B. Fried (born September 9, 1978) is an American digital forensic consultant, investigator, business executive, and author. He is a thought-leader in digital forensics, and has written several books in the field.

Early life and education

Fried was born on September 9, 1978, in Brooklyn, New York. His father is a bank executive, and his mother was a homemaker. He grew up in East Meadow, New York.

Fried attended the University of New Haven, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in forensic science in 2001 and a Master of Science in forensic science in 2002.

In 2021, he was awarded a Certificate in Law Enforcement Science and a Certificate in Forensic Computer Investigation from the University of New Haven.

In 2022, Fried was awarded a Professional Certificate in Information Protection and Security from the University of New Haven.

Career

In 2002, Fried worked as a graduate student intern with SEARCH Group before joining the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) in Fairmont, West Virginia, as a computer crime specialist. He remained with NW3C until 2005.

Since 2005, Fried has held senior leadership roles with global professional services firms, focusing on electronic evidence, including its identification, preservation, collection, and examination. He has also provided written and oral expert testimony in this area.

Fried is an adjunct faculty member in the M.S. Investigations Graduate Program at the University of New Haven, and serves on the program’s Board of Advisors. In 2024, he was named a Fellow at the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science. He also sits on the EC-Council Global Advisory Board for the Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) certification.

Fried co-sponsors and co-hosts the Annual Symposium on eCrime, with the world renowned forensic scientist, Dr. Henry C. Lee.

He is a frequent speaker at industry events and a featured guest on digital forensics, professional investigator, and eDiscovery focued podcasts.

Industry Recognition and Accolades

In 2021, Fried was recognized as a Continued Top Writer And Contributor to PI Magazine.

Additionally, he was the recipent of the 2021 Editor Publisher Tony Golec Award, issued by the National Association of Legal Investigators (NALI).

In 2024, Fried was named a Top Professional Investigator by PI Magazine.

Publications and writing

Since 2020, Fried has been writing articles for PI Magazine. He created the magazine's CyberSleuthing department, where he covers topics involving digital forensics, cybersecurity and eDiscovery.

Fried is the author of the Forensic Data Collections 2.0 book series, published between 2022 and 2025, which addresses topics related to digital forensics.
