In science, a Master of Science (Latin: Magisterii Scientiae; abbreviated MS, MSc, M.Sc.), is a master's degree awarded by universities in many countries, or a person who holds a master's degree in the field of science While the Master of Science degree is less common than the Master of Arts degree, it is typically awarded for studies in the sciences, engineering or medicine, and is typically for programmes that are more focused on scientific and mathematical subjects; however, individual universities may have their own conventions and may also award the degree for fields that are traditionally considered to be within the humanities and social sciences. Earning a Master of Science degree often requires the completion of a thesis, however this is dependent on the individual school.

The University of Michigan was the first institution to award the Master of Science degree, which was established in 1858. De Volson Wood, who received a Master of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 1859, was one of the very first winners of the honour.
