West Haven, Connecticut is home to the private University of New Haven (UNH), sometimes known simply as New Haven. The grounds of the university include around 122 acres of land and are comprised of two campuses: the main campus is located in West Haven, Connecticut, while the graduate school campus is located in Orange, Connecticut. In addition to the School of Health Sciences, the institution is home to the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, the Pompea College of Business, the Tagliatela College of Engineering, the Pompea College of Arts and Sciences, and the Tagliatela College of Engineering. It is one of the few institutions in the nation that has been classified as a CAE. The university is a participant in the Northeast-10 Conference, and the charger, a kind of mediaeval battle horse, serves as the institution's unofficial mascot.

When it was first established in 1920, the University of New Haven was known as the New Haven YMCA Junior College. It was a division of Northeastern University and for the first nearly 40 years of its existence, it collaborated with Yale University by sharing facilities, laboratories, and faculty members.

There are over 50 graduate programmes and roughly 100 undergraduate programmes available at the University of New Haven. Students spend around 33% of their time studying arts and sciences, 21% of their time studying business, 12% of their time studying engineering, and 34% of their time studying criminal justice and forensic sciences.

The university offers several undergraduate degree programmes, some of which have received national recognition. The undergraduate degree programmes that have received the most attention include those in the fields of engineering, forensic science, criminal justice, marine biology, music and sound recording, as well as music industry. The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival will take place on the campus of the College of Arts and Sciences in January of 2012. The festival was chosen to be hosted by the college's theatre department.

The Princeton Review's "Best 381 Colleges" guidebook for 2017 and "The Best 386 Colleges" guidebook for 2021 both include the University of New Haven as one of the colleges to be considered. The institution was recognised by the Princeton Review as one of the "Best in the Northeast" in each of the two most recent academic years.

The University of New Haven was tied for 59th place in the category of regional institutions (north) in the rankings that were released by U.S. News & World Report in the year 2020.

AACSB International granted accreditation to the College of Business at the University of New Haven in 2015.
