Crystal Collier (born May 23, 1970) is an American therapist, prevention researcher, educator, and author. Her work teaches the neurodevelopmental effects of high-risk behavior and her free, online prevention program KnowYourNeuro.org is used by families and schools worldwide.[1]
Education
Collier was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1993. She later obtained a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology at the University of Houston in 1995 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education at Sam Houston State University.
Career
While studying for her Master's in Clinical Psychology, Collier worked as a psychiatric technician at Methodist Hospital and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. During her internship, she assisted with neuropsychological testing for veterans and post-graduate research on Gulf War Syndrome.[2]
In 1999, Collier began her counseling career working with adolescents at the Center for Success and Independence. In 2007, she became the Clinical Director of an adolescent prevention program at Teen & Family Services.[3]
Over the next decade, Collier refined her prevention curriculum, developing the neuroscience-based model Know Your Neuro, which educates families about the neurodevelopmental effects of high-risk behavior.[4] Between 2013 and 2017, she replicated this curriculum for use in private and public schools, adapting it for middle and high school students at institutions like St. Francis Episcopal School.[5] She also partnered with organizations like the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence to expand access to prevention tools.[6]
Collier has taught undergraduate and graduate classes at Sam Houston State University, University of St. Thomas (Texas), and other institutions.[7]
