The Institution of Houston (often referred to simply as UH) is a public research university located in Houston, Texas. UH is a part of the Institution of Houston System and is the third-largest university in the state of Texas with more than 47,000 students. The university was established in 1927. Including its locations in Sugar Land and Katy, the company's campus has a total area of 894 acres (3.62 km2) and is located mostly in the southeast part of Houston. This academic institution has the distinction of being categorised as a "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very high research activity."

Through its 16 academic colleges and schools as well as its interdisciplinary Honors College, the university provides more than 276 degree programmes for students to choose from. These degree programmes include those leading to professional degrees in the fields of architecture, law, optometry, medicine, and pharmacy. The university invests a total of $203 million each year in research and maintains a total of more than 35 research centres and institutions on its main campus. Interdisciplinary research focuses on topics such as superconductivity, the commercialization of space, space exploration, biomedical engineering and sciences, energy and natural resources, and artificial intelligence. The University of Hawaii hands out more than 300,000 degrees each year and confers about 11,000 of them. The economic effect of the institution is estimated to generate over 62,000 employment and contribute more than $6.4 billion yearly to the economy of Texas. 2022 saw the establishment of the Shell Energy Transition Institute, which was made possible by a donation of $10 million from Shell. The institution opened its College of Medicine in the year 2020 with the goal of bettering the general health and the health care services available in its city and state. A grant of fifty million dollars was made to the College of Medicine by businessman and University of Houston System Chairman Tilman Fertitta in 2022. In recognition of this gift, the College of Medicine was renamed the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine.

The University of Houston plays home to a diverse range of events, including concerts, lectures, and theatrical productions. More than 500 student groups and 17 intercollegiate sports teams may be found here. Traditions and events held on a yearly basis at the University of Hawaii include The Cat's Back, Homecoming, and Frontier Fiesta. The varsity sports teams of the institution, who play in the highest level of NCAA competition and are known as the Houston Cougars, are members of the American Athletic Conference and take part in Division I of the NCAA in all sports. The institution was sent an offer to participate in the Big 12 Conference in 2021, which they subsequently accepted. The football team competes in bowl games on a regular basis, while the men's basketball team has competed in the NCAA Division I Tournament 23 times overall, including six visits in the Elite Eight and four in the Final Four. The men's golf team has won a total of 16 national titles, which is the most in the history of the NCAA. In 2022, the men's track and field team at UH won its seventh Indoor Conference Championship, while the swimming and diving team at UH successfully defended their American Athletic Conference championship for the sixth season in a row, earning both titles.
