The scientific theory of the mind and behaviour is known as psychology. Psychology is the study of conscious and unconscious processes, such as emotions and thoughts, and comprises a variety of subfields. It is an academic topic with a wide range of applications, straddling the borders between the scientific sciences and the social sciences. Psychologists are interested in gaining a better knowledge of the emergent features of brains, which relates the discipline to the field of neuroscience. Psychologists seek to understand the behaviour of people and organisations through the lens of social science.

A psychologist is a trained professional who works as a practitioner or researcher in the field of psychology. Some psychologists may be classified as social, behavior, or cognitive scientists, based on their ongoing research. In an effort to better understand the role of mental activities in individual and societal behaviour, several psychologists have turned their attention to cognitive functions. Another area of study is the physiological and biological mechanisms that underpin cognitive functions and behaviours in humans.

A psychologist's study interests include seeing and thinking about the world; paying attention and feeling emotions; intelligence; subjective experiences; motivation; brain functioning; and personality. Interpersonal connections, psychological resilience, family resilience, and other aspects of social psychology are all topics that psychologists are interested in exploring. They also take into account the unconscious mind. Researchers in the field of psychology use empirical approaches to infer causal and correlational links between psychosocial variables in their investigations. Some clinical and counselling psychologists, although not all, depend on symbolic interpretation in their work.

Even though psychological knowledge is often used to the evaluation and treatment of mental health disorders, it is also directed toward the study and resolution of issues that arise in many other domains of human endeavour. According to many experts, psychology's ultimate goal is to serve society. Thousands of psychologists are active in some kind of therapeutic function, whether it's in a clinical environment, counselling practise, or school. A broad variety of subjects connected to mental processes and behaviour are investigated by other psychologists in the course of their scientific studies. With most cases, the latter group of psychologist is working in research universities (e.g., universities, medical schools, hospitals). Another kind of psychologist is seen in the workplace, namely in industrial and organisational contexts. Others are active in research on human development, ageing, sports, health, forensics, and the media, to name a few areas of interest.
