Neuroscience is the scientific central nervous system. It is a multidisciplinary discipline that brings together physiology, anatomy, molecular biology, developmental biology, cytology, computer science, and mathematical modelling to better understand the basic and emergent features of neurons, glia, and neural circuits. The understanding of the genetic origin of learning, memory, behaviour, perception, and consciousness has been referred to as the "epic challenge" of the biological sciences by Eric Kandel.

The field of neuroscience has grown in scope throughout time to cover a variety of ways to studying the nervous system on a variety of scales. The tools utilised by neuroscientists have grown tremendously in recent years, ranging from molecular and cellular investigations of individual neurons to imaging of sensory, motor, and cognitive processes in the brain.
