Younes Medkour (born August 20, 1993)[1] is a Canadian biologist and a postdoctoral fellow studying Metabolic disorder|metabolic disorders at McGill University[2]. He is known for his research on Ageing, which focused on lifespan extension using Phytochemical[3]. Younes has also co-founded two businesses: NBT Consultants and RYM Labs.

Early life and education

Younes Medkour was born in Batna, Algeria in 1993[1], and grew up in Montreal (Canada). His family emigrated to Canada in 2002 and has been living there since then[1]. Medkour obtained a Bachelor of Science at Concordia University in biology[3]. In 2020, he received a Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology[3] from the same school, focusing on the mechanisms underlying aging in yeast. In 2018, he was appointed as one of Concordia University's Public Scholar—a group of select students whose mandate is to connect with the community and represent the university's body of research.[4]

Research

While Medkour was in Vladimir Titorenko's laboratory and in collaboration with Idunn Technologies, he discovered a group of anti-aging compounds that significantly increase Life expectancy[5]. His doctoral work then focused on elucidating the mechanisms through which the most potent of these Phytochemical—a natural extract from the Salix alba delays yeast chronological aging[6]. This mechanism integrates an age-related form of liponecrotic cell death, the unfolded protein response in the endoplasmic reticulum, and Mitochondrion functionality into a network governed by a Nutrient sensing protein kinase[6].

His discoveries in the laboratory of Vladimir Titorenko have been publish in the reputable scientific journal Oncotarget[5][6][7][8] and highlighted by multiple media outlets including Public Establishment of Television|Algerian Television[9][10], Montreal Gazette[11], Concordia University's news[12], TVA Nouvelles[13], and others.

In 2020, he joined the laboratory of Vincent Giguère at the Goodman Cancer Research Institute of McGill University to study Metabolic disorder[1]. He aims to solve the precise molecular mechanism through which oxidative stress regulates the Estrogen-related receptor alpha|estrogen-related receptors—a group of orphan Nuclear receptor that serve as master regulators of metabolism[1]. He is also working on characterizing the implication of this novel regulatory mechanism in the action of insulin and its contributions to type 2 diabetes[1].

Entrepreneurship

In 2021, Medkour co-founded NBT Consultants a Montreal-born biotechnology Consulting firm that has for mission to help young entrepreneurs think and develop their biotechnology project by providing them with scientific insights and by vetting their science.

He also is the CEO and co-founder of RYM Labs a company that aims to help startups think and implement their Information technology ecosystem. This company operates in Algeria and Canada.
