A biologist is a scientist who specialises in biology and who does study in this field. Individual cells, multicellular organisms, and communities of interacting populations are all of interest to biologists who are interested in the study of life on Earth. They are often trained in a specialised area of biology (for example, molecular biology, zoology, or evolutionary biology) and have a specific research emphasis in their field (e.g., studying malaria or cancer).

The goal of biologists who work in fundamental research is to further our understanding of the natural world and its inhabitants. They carry out their study utilising the scientific method, which is an empirical technique for evaluating ideas that has been used for centuries. Some of their findings may have particular uses, such as in biotechnology, which aims to create medically beneficial goods for people.

Biologists nowadays often have one or more academic degrees, such as a bachelor's degree and an advanced qualification such as a master's or doctoral qualification. Biologists, like other scientists, may be found working in a variety of industries and sectors of the economy, including academia, non-profits, private business, and the government.
