Vijayasarathi Balasubramanian (born June 3, 1985) is an Indian data scientist renowned for his significant contributions to technology, especially in Artificial Intelligence and data science.[1] With over 17 years of experience in retail, telecom, and technology sectors, he holds a Master of Science in Data Science and excels in Spark, Python, R, SQL and cloud technologies.[2] Balasubramanian's career includes roles at The Home Depot, British Telecom, AT&T, and his current position as a Senior Data scientist at Microsoft.[3]

His commitment to community involvement is clear through his proactive participation in technical groups and ties with respected organizations.[4] Notably, he has received recognition through industry features and awards such as the International Achievers Awards and the 2023 IT Professional of the Year accolade.

Early life and education

Balasubramanian was born on June 3, 1985, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, to his parents, Balasubramanian Parthasarathy and Santhi Narayanaswamy. He spent his formative years in Cheyyar, Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu, where he demonstrated an affinity for Mathematics at Government Boys Higher Secondary School.

In 2002, Balasubramanian joined Thiagarajar College of Engineering in Madurai, graduating with a Bachelor's in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2006. He also served as the lead editor for the technical magazine Minalai and won several hardware and software competitions. Notably, he developed a program for advanced graphical techniques in designing electrical machines, securing the top prize in a national technical contest. His paper on solar energy-based power generation earned a top prize in an International conference.

Balasubramanian pursued further education, attaining a Master's in Data Science from the University of Notre Dame, USA. During his university years, Balasubramanian explored the power of AI, applying machine learning to create recommender systems for e-commerce and businesses. He also holds various certifications across technology domains, establishing him as a distinguished figure in the field.

Career

Following his graduation, Balasubramanian commenced his professional journey at British Telecom. As a data ingestion engineer, he played a pivotal role in establishing the pioneering online billing system. Additionally, his introduction of dynamic tax structures optimized call detail record ingestion for British Telecom's extensive clientele.

In 2009, Balasubramanian transitioned to The Home Depot as a data ingestion and integration specialist. His contributions streamlined the purchase order data flow within the supply chain workflow. Managing over 600,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs) for more than 2000 North American home improvement retail stores, he further established vital return-to-vendor processes and distribution centers.[5]

Advancing in his career, Balasubramanian assumed the role of principal advanced analyst at AT&T in 2014. During this tenure, he contributed to the launch of "Data Patterns for Visitors," employing advanced machine-learning techniques to address complex enterprise challenges, including customer behavior analysis.[6]

From 2019 to 2022, Balasubramanian made significant advancements in AT&T's Business Marketing division, a key revenue driver.[7] He introduced a Lead Scoring process, optimized marketing strategies through sophisticated machine-learning methodologies, and identified potential customers to streamline sales efforts.[8]

Balasubramanian also served as a Data Scientist at Horizon Education Alliance, where he focused on comprehending the implications of “Manufacturing Day” for students of Indiana. His role encompassed the application of statistical methodologies such as McNemar's test, two-tailed t-test, and chi-square test to ascertain the significance of the event's impact. Additionally, he adeptly constructed interactive Tableau dashboards and engineered a robust data processing pipeline to enhance analytical capabilities.[9]

In 2022, Balasubramanian joined Microsoft as a senior data and applied science architect, concentrating on enhancing the digital store. His responsibilities encompass personalized customer interactions and the development of a comprehensive product recommendation engine.[10]

Balasubramanian actively contributes to open-source technologies, with notable engagements in Apache Airflow, a workflow management platform for data engineering pipelines, and Apache Hudi, a transactional data lake platform that seamlessly integrates database and data warehouse functionalities within the data lake ecosystem.

Balasubramanian is a mentor and coach in Correlation One's "Data Science for All" (DS4A) program. He has assisted over 8,000 individuals in addressing complex technical challenges on Stack Overflow. He is associated with platforms like ADPList[11] and GrowthMentor, where he guides and nurtures the next generation of science start-up founders. Additionally, his volunteer work with Friends of the Children demonstrates his commitment to a positive social impact.[12]

He was a judge for "Data Fest 2021" at the University of Notre Dame. His academic contributions encompass book reviewing for O’Reilly Media, IGI Global and research journal content reviewing for IEEE,elsevier and PeerJ.
