Tim Murphy (born 13 March) is an American Business Executive currently serving as the CEO of APX Operating Company LLC (dba Boomers Parks) in North America owned by the Cerberus private equity firm, and a board member of Coney Park, Happy City and YuKids in Latin America for The Carlyle Group - Peru Fund. Murphy is a highly recognized turnaround specialist for Family Entertainment Centers (FEC’s), restaurants, retail and other businesses in the Food & Beverages sector.[1]

Murphy has over 35 years of experience and in his diversified career has held numerous positions, ranging from CEO, President, COO, CFO, consulting advisor, and Advisory and Board Members serving over 150 brands, helping them scale their business and gain more traction. He has worked with a number of high-profile clientele and is known to build close professional relationships with them.[2]

Murphy harbors a vast range of specialties which include finance, acquisitions & mergers, hospitality management, P&L management, EBITDA growth, strategic partnerships, commercial real estate development, and team building, to name a few. Murphy is also a best-selling author and renowned keynote speaker. His industry insights have garnered significant interest across television, radio, webinars, magazines, and at conventions and trade associations around the world.[3]

Early life and education

Murphy was born on 13 March to Al Murphy and Jean Murphy. He grew up in Cape May, New Jersey with three older brothers named Steve Murphy, Rick Murphy and Harry Murphy. When he was eight years old, Murphy started working with his father and mother in their many businesses and an FEC called The Spirit of ’76 with a miniature-golf, arcade and restaurant. While growing up, he also worked in fence, welding, construction and agricultural businesses, gaining substantial business experiences, while learning from his parents prior to starting his professional career.

In 1986, Murphy enrolled at the University of Central Florida, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in Science with a concentration in Accounting. After that, he went to Orlando College, where he earned his MBA in Finance in 1992.

Career

Murphy started his career when he joined Walt Disney World in foods when EPCOT Center opened October 1982 and later in the Finance department. He worked for seven years there managing accounts for EPCOT, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Grand Floridian, Caribbean Beach, Contemporary, Polynesian Inn, Disney Inn resorts, and others. Murphy also worked as a Controller for Classic Chevy International, Finance Manager for Darden Restaurants, owners of Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Bahama Breeze and China Coast, and CFO for McGuffey’s Restaurants in Asheville, North Carolina.[4]

In 1996, Murphy became the Finance Director for Flagstar Restaurant Group later becoming Advantica Restaurant Group owners of Denny’s, Hardee’s, Quincy’s, El Pollo Loco, Cocos, Carrows, Mother Butler Pies, Winchell Donuts, and Volume Services where he worked for three years. In 1997, Murphy joined CFL Investments, where he served for 23 years as a Chairman, Board Director, Advisory Board Director, CEO, President, COO, and CFO for multiple companies that he worked and consulted for.

In 2002, Murphy became the CFO for Applebee’s franchise in Central Florida mentored by the former Chairman and CEO, Abe Gustin Jr., of Applebee’s International who grew Applebee’s to 1,300+ locations before he retired in 2000. During his tenure of four years, Murphy also acted as CEO for 15 of Applebee’s franchise locations, and 4 Green Hills Grilles in Alabama and Tennessee, and Ray’s on the River in Atlanta. Soon after his exit from Applebee’s, Murphy joined Sonny’s Bar-B-Q in a similar position for a franchisor with 153 restaurants and 40 franchisees, where he worked for three years.

In 2016, Murphy started working for Rebounderz International FECs franchisor of trampoline parks and ninja warrior courses, where he worked for three years as a CEO, President, CFO, and Board Member. In 2019, he became a board member of Coney Park, Happy City and YuKids in Columbia, Peru and Chile, and a year later CEO of APX Operating Company LLC (dba Boomers Parks), leading family entertainment centers and water parks, where he is currently working.[5]

Personal life

Murphy is married to Tracy Lynn, and the couple has three children together named Timothy, Troy, and Todd. He is an avid Dallas Cowboys, Orlando Magic, and University of Central Florida Knights fan. Since turning 40, Murphy has completed 26 marathons, including the Disney Dopey Challenge.
