Suman Bannerjee (born March 9, 1975) is an Indian investment professional, hedge fund manager, and business executive who has made a name for himself in the financial industry for his expertise in alternative investments and emerging markets.[1] He is the founder of Hedonova, an alternative investment management firm based in Los Angeles, California.
Bannerjee is a seasoned investment professional with over 30 years of experience in the financial industry. He has worked for companies such as Societe Generale Equipment Finance, Millennium Partners, and DKEP, where he managed and directed a $5 billion alternative investment book.[2]
Additionally, Bannerjee's views on cryptocurrency, union budgets, and other financial and investment-related topics have been featured in media publications such as Financial Express, Money Control,[3] and News18.[4][5]
Early life and education
Bannerjee was born in Purulia, West Bengal, and grew up in Darjeeling and Kolkata. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, economics, and philosophy from the University of Cambridge in 1990. Additionally, he is a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst and a member of the CAIA association.
Career
Bannerjee began his career in 1990 in the equipment finance and supply chain finance division at Societe Generale Equipment Finance, where he rose to the position of vice president. At SGEF, he was responsible for overseeing the origination, underwriting, and management of equipment and supply chain finance. Bannerjee worked at SGEF for almost 11 years, gaining experience and expertise in alternative investments,[6] equipment financing, equity capital markets, portfolio management, product development, and team leadership.[7]
In April 2003, Bannerjee joined Millennium as the global portfolio manager. At Millennium, he led the design and implementation of investment strategies and managed the firm's risk exposure. During his tenure at Millennium, Bannerjee was recognized as the best fund manager for credit and structured credit.
In 2013, Bannerjee started working as the alternative investment portfolio manager at DKEP. He faced certain challenges while targeting Indian dental clinics for investments with his colleague Alexander Cavendish. Realizing the challenges faced by retail investors while accessing alternative investments, Bannerjee and Cavendish conceptualized the idea to establish Hedonova.
Hedonova was founded in December 2019, and it is known for its investments in alternative asset classes such as real estate, wines, art, startups, students, NFTs, litigation finance, and equipment finance.[8] The company has expanded its presence in Europe and Asia by operating feeder funds in countries such as India, Singapore, and Luxembourg. Bannerjee serves as the chief investment officer at Hedonova,[9][10] overseeing the company's investment strategies and ensuring the performance of its portfolios.
Personal life
Bannerjee resides in Paris, France, with his wife and two daughters. Apart from his work, Bannerjee enjoys reading philosophy and biography books, playing poker, and spending time with his family and close friends. He is a former junior-level cricket player and art collector.
