University of Ibadan
Ibadan, Nigeria is home to the University of Ibadan (UI), a prestigious public research institution. The institution that is now known as the University of Ibadan began its life in 1948 as University College Ibadan, one of the several colleges that make up the University of London. It is the oldest degree-granting institution in Nigeria, having established its status as an autonomous university in 1962. The University of Ibadan has made significant contributions to the nation of Nigeria's cultural, political, economic, and industrial growth by way of its graduate network. Because of its long history and widespread influence, the University of Ibadan is often regarded as one of the continent's most distinguished academic institutions.
The University of Ibadan is made up of 92 academic departments that are organised into 17 faculties. These faculties include Arts, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Agriculture, the Social Sciences, Education, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Technology, Law, Public Health, Dentistry, Economics and Management Sciences, Renewable Natural Resources, Environmental Design and Management, and Multidisciplinary Studies. The University of Ibadan was founded in 1887 and is located in Ibadan, Nigeria. The College of Medicine is comprised of the Dental School, as well as the Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, and Public Health. Other academic departments at the university include: the Institute of Child Health; the Institute of Education; the Institute of African Studies; the Centre for Child, Adolescent, and Mental Health; the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI); the Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training (IAMRAT); the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases; the Centre for Drug Discovery, Development, and Production (CDDDP); and the Centre for Control and Prevention of Zoonoses (CCPZ). The newly formed National Institute for Maternal, Child, and Neonatal Health (NIMCNH), the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), and the School of Business (UISB) have all begun their operations.
Around thirty percent of the total number of students enrolled in the university's normal study mode are able to find housing in one of the university's fifteen halls of residence. The Obafemi Awolowo Hall is the largest female hall in West Africa. There are a total of 5,339 staff members working at the institution, and there are 1,212 housing units available to them across all levels of employment. The campus of the institution is home to residential and athletic facilities for both faculty and students, in addition to distinct botanical and zoological gardens.
The university is responsible for the education of a large number of notable alumni, such as a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, eminent mathematicians, scientists, politicians, lawyers, business icons, philosophers, writers, monarchs, countless technocrats, recipients of the Nigerian National order of merit, and Fellows of the various learned academies. In September of 2016, it made history by being the first institution in Nigeria to crack the top 1000 of the Times Higher Education rankings. Before then, it consistently ranked in the top 10 African Universities on Webometrics' list of best universities in Africa. According to Webometrics, the UI website is now rated first in Nigeria and 1196th overall in the globe.
