Public university

As contrast to a private university, a public university is one that is either owned by the state or gets major public funding via a national or subnational government. A public college is similar to a public university in that it also receives funding from the state. The nature of the educational system of a nation (or area) determines, to a considerable extent, whether or not a national university may be classified as a public institution in that nation (or region).
