The science and practise of finding, creating, preparing, distributing, evaluating, and monitoring pharmaceuticals is known as pharmacy. The overarching goal of pharmacy is to ensure that patients have access to medicines that are safe, effective, and cost-effective. Since it connects the fields of health sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and natural sciences, it is considered a miscellaneous science. While pharmaceutical corporations are responsible for the production of the vast majority of medications these days, professional practise is shifting to focus more on clinical aspects. The practise of pharmacy may be categorised as either community pharmacy or institutional pharmacy, depending on the location of the business. In the context of community and institutional pharmacies, the provision of direct patient care is what is referred to as clinical pharmacy.

Traditional pharmacy tasks, such as manufacturing pharmaceuticals and distributing them to customers, are included in the purview of professional pharmacy practise. It also covers more contemporary services associated with healthcare, such as clinical services, examining pharmaceuticals for their safety and effectiveness, and offering information on various drugs. Because of this, pharmacists are considered to be the foremost authorities in drug treatment and are the primary healthcare professionals responsible for ensuring that patients make the most effective use of their medications.

This kind of business is referred to as a pharmacy in the United States (where the phrase is used more often) or a chemists in Great Britain (where the term is used more frequently, even though pharmacy is also used) [citation required]. In both the United States and Canada, it is common practise for pharmacies to sell non-prescription and prescription medications, in addition to a wide variety of other products, including confectionery, cosmetics, office supplies, toys, hair care products and magazines, and even, on occasion, refreshments and groceries.

The activity of the apothecary, which included the examination of herbal and chemical components, is often considered to be a forerunner of the current sciences of chemistry and pharmacology since it took place prior to the development of the scientific method.
