Sonia Majeed (born December 14, 1987) is an Asian Pakistani award-winning singer, songwriter, recording artist, producer, philanthropist, and humanitarian.[1] She is the world’s first non-UAE person to sing the UAE National Anthem.[2][3]

Notable work includes the lead singer for the film "Salam Madarsa Hindustani"[5] and singles such as "Daman Lagiyan Maula" (2021), "Bhar Do Jholi" (2023), "Duaa" (2023), and "Maula Ya Salli Wa Sallim" (2022), among others. Majeed is often referred to as the "Princess of Hearts" and “A Flower Child” and is known for her music that revolves around love, peace, and unity.[6]

Majeed is renowned for representing the United Arab Emirates on international platforms. She actively supports humanitarian and philanthropic causes focused on women and children. Notably, she holds the titles of Global Peace Ambassador, Global Voice Ambassador, and Global Goodwill Ambassador.[7]

Her work has been acknowledged through several awards and accolades, including the Golden Visa by Dubai, United Arab Emirates.[8] She has been featured in various publications and media outlets, including DNA India, Disrupt Magazine, Formidable Women Magazine, and Mid Day.

Early life and education

Majeed was born in 1987 into a Punjabi Muslim family in Lahore, Pakistan. She was raised in London and attended Halcyon London International School for her high school education. Inspired by her Mentor Samran Warsi, Majeed developed a strong interest in music at a young age.

Following high school, she moved to Dubai, where she pursued a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in hospitality from Jaipur University, graduating in 2017.

In 2020, Majeed received an honorary doctorate of music from the Royal American University.

Career

Music

Majeed is a singer-songwriter, recording artist, and producer known for her music that carries themes of love, peace, and unity. She began her career in 2012 as a singer, performer, and recording artist at Samran's Studio in Dubai. Her musical repertoire spans multiple genres, including classical, folklore, and modern pop.

In 2019, Majeed garnered international recognition for her achievement as the world's first non-UAE person to perform the UAE National Anthem, "Ishi Biladi." She also contributed as the lead singer for the 2021 film "Salam Madarsa Hindustani,"[9] where her vocals added depth to the film's emotional storytelling.

Debuting in 2018 with the single "Daman Lagiyan Maula," Majeed has since built a notable discography with nine credits to her name. Notable singles include "Watan" (2023), "Bhar Do Jholi" (2023), "Duaa" (2023), "Ya Nabi Salam Alayka" (2022), "Maula Ya Salli Wa Sallim" (2022), "Qasida Burda Shariff" (2021), and "Dhamal" (2020).

Philanthropy and humanitarian work

Majeed is involved in various philanthropic and humanitarian activities, with a particular focus on initiatives benefitting women and children on a global scale. Her engagement encompasses various roles within the United Nations program, where she serves as a Voice Ambassador, Peace Ambassador, and Goodwill Ambassador. She has also been designated as a Messenger of Humanity by the UN and holds the position of Country Director UAE for the World Youth Forum (#WYS).

She actively supports and volunteers for the #HEforShe Program of UN Women, leads the Dubai Girl Up Club, advocates for the Girl Up Program by UN Women, and is a member of the She's the First (STF) Action Network. She also serves as an ambassador for Greenden and an advocate for the Global Goals. Majeed holds the title of #NotATarget Ambassador for the Humanity Program by the UN and serves as an Ambassador for the UAE for the Child Abuse Program, MyBodyIsMyBody. She is the country head (president) of the African Festival Foundation in UAE, and the ambassador of Global Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Majeed holds several certificates that recognize her philanthropic and humanitarian efforts. Notably, she received recognition from The Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences for her contributions to combatting the spread of COVID-19.

In 2020, Majeed was honored with the Chartered Fellowship Award and took on the role of Global Voice Ambassador for Forum 36 Plus Peace and Unity. Moreover, she holds the position of Vice-Secretary and serves as a counselor within the Youth Council of the Interstate Council of the Earth-Loving Friendly Organization (ELFO).

In December 2022, Majeed was designated as the Youth Ambassador for UAE, Dubai by the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC). Additionally, she advocates for Naturopathy and holds certification from the Shrivani Naturopathy Care & Research Centre in Chandrapur.

In addition to her humanitarian work, Majeed is associated with various brands as an ambassador. These affiliations include Noon.com, an e-commerce platform, and GOGO Jeans Spain. She is the Youth Ambassador for the International Human Rights Commission and serves as a Brand Ambassador for PYAM, Pakistan's first media platform for youth.

Majeed introduced Dubai’s first celebrity mobile app, which collects and invests in creative ideas and projects while inspiring young Emiratis and others to start their ventures in Dubai. The #SoniaMajeedApp primarily highlights the success stories of entrepreneurs.
