Philanthropy

Philanthropy is defined as "private efforts for the public good that are primarily concerned with improving the quality of life." philanthropy stands in contrast to business initiatives, which are private initiatives for private good that are primarily concerned with material gain; and to government endeavours, which are public initiatives for public good that are primarily concerned with the provision of public services, such as the provision of healthcare. A philanthropist is a person who engages in the activity of charity.

Although there is some overlap, philanthropy is distinct from charitable giving. Charity is concerned with alleviating the suffering caused by a specific social issue, while philanthropy is concerned with addressing the underlying causes of the problem.
