Sara Maeng (born June 20, 1995) is a renowned Korean composer, audio director, and sound designer with a diverse range of experience in creating musical pieces and producing sound effects. She is a currently composer and sound designer for Film, TV, and video games. With her passion for Korean traditional music and her experience in interactive sound design, and spatial audio, she is a versatile and highly skilled composer and sound designer, having been awarded at the International Women Composer Competition in Florence, Italy.[1]

Early life and education

Maeng was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, and started playing the piano at a young age. She studied music at Howon University, majoring in jazz, K-POP, gospel, and R&B music. After graduation, she decided to pursue a career as a film composer and moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music. There, she double majored in film scoring and composition and graduated with honors, receiving the World Tour Scholarship, the Jim Reyes Award, and the Achievement Award Scholarship.

Career

Maeng's talents as a composer and sound designer were soon recognized, and she started her career as a music director at Hallelujah Community Church in Seoul. She worked as a producer, music composer, and arranger for four years before getting an internship at Interlock Media in Boston in 2019. During this time, she worked on movies such as "Fuller" and "Codeswitching," which premiered at the Roxbury International Film Festival.[2]

In March 2021, Maeng worked as a composer and sound designer at the New York School of Fine Arts on the short film "Bon Appetite." The film received recognition at the New York Oniros Film Award, the Los Angeles International Film Festival, and the Seoul International Food Film Festival.

In August 2021, Maeng joined Paradox Evenue as a lead composer and arranger, where she coordinated and arranged music compositions and soundtracks for video games and documentary films.[3] From June 2021 to December 2022, Maeng worked as a composer and spatial audio director on the "Floor" film series for Naver, creating immersive audio assets and writing music with a 5.1 surround mix. The film effectively attracted its intended Korean audience.

Maeng's passion for Korean traditional music led her to work with many artists, such as Yoron Israel, Claudio Ragazzi, and Julius Williams, among others. She believes in bringing Korean traditional music to Western movies for cultural evolution. Additionally, she has experience in interactive sound design, VR, spatial audio, Dolby Atmos, and more.

In May 2022, Maeng started working as a sound designer, additional composer, and studio assistant for LM Audio Production LLC.She has worked on video games such as "The Dark World: Karma," "Arena Breakout," and "PUBG Mobile," showcasing her diverse range of skills and talents. She is a highly accomplished composer, audio director, and sound designer who has made significant contributions to the film, television, video game, and concert music industries.[4]

Awards and recognitions

  • Maeng won the International Women Composer Competition in Florence, Italy, for “Cosmos.”
  • She has been selected as a finalist at the International Composition Competition “Musia per archi” 2023, which will take place in Lviv, Ukraine.[5]
