Rajasthan is a state in northern India that is known for its palaces. It has a total land area of 342,239 square kilometres (132,139 square miles), or 10.4 percent of India's total land area. It is the biggest state in India in terms of land area and the sixth most populous state in terms of people. Arid India is located on the country's northwestern side, where it encompasses most of the vast and inhospitable Thar Desert (also known as the Great Indian Desert). It shares a border with Pakistan, with the Pakistani states of Punjab to the northwest and Sindh to the west, and runs along the Sutlej-Indus River valley. Five other Indian states share its borders: Punjab to the north, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to the northeast, Madhya Pradesh to the southeast, and Gujarat to the southwest. Punjab is the most populous of these states. Located between 23.3 and 30.12 degrees North latitude and 69.30 to 78.17 degrees East longitude, it is bordered on the south by the Tropic of Cancer, which passes through its southernmost point.

The Indus Valley Civilization ruins at Kalibangan and Balathal, the Dilwara Temples, a Jain pilgrimage site at Rajasthan's only hill station, Mount Abu, in the ancient Aravalli mountain range, and the Keoladeo National Park of Bharatpur, a World Heritage Site known for its bird life, are just a few of the state's most notable attractions. As well as tiger reserves, Rajasthan is home to three national parks, including the Ranthambore National Park in Sawai Madhopur, the Sariska Tiger Reserve near Alwar, and the Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve near Kota.

It was created on March 30, 1949, when Rajputana, the name given by the British Raj to its dependencies in the area, was amalgamated with the Dominion of India to establish the state of Madhya Pradesh. Jaipur serves as the country's capital and biggest city. Other notable cities include Jodhpur, Kota, Bikaner, Ajmer, Bharatpur, and Udaipur, amongst many more. Rajasthan's economy is the seventh-largest state economy in India, with a gross domestic product of 10.20 lakh crore (US$140 billion) and a per capita GDP of 118,000 (US$1,600), making it the seventh-largest state economy in the world. Rajasthan is ranked 29th out of 30 Indian states in terms of human development.
