The Musk Foundation, established in 2001 by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk and his brother Kimbal Musk, is a private grantmaking foundation that focuses on various areas such as renewable energy research, human space exploration research, pediatric research, science and engineering education, and the development of safe artificial intelligence to benefit humanity.[1][2] The foundation supports charitable causes, including international aid nonprofits, healthcare organizations, and educational institutions.[3][4]

History

The Musk Foundation is a private grantmaking foundation founded in 2002 by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk and his brother, Kimbal Musk. The brothers serve as the foundation’s sole officers; Elon Musk is the president and board director, while Kimbal Musk is the secretary, treasurer, and board director.[7][8]

The foundation is based in Palo Alto, California. It has been at the forefront of philanthropic efforts, supporting initiatives that align with its mission of advancing renewable energy, space exploration, pediatric research, education in science and engineering, and the development of safe artificial intelligence for the betterment of humanity.[9]

In 2012, Elon Musk publicly declared his commitment to philanthropy by joining the Giving Pledge initiative. He pledged to donate the majority of his wealth to charitable causes, either during his lifetime or in his will.[10][11]

In 2016, Elon Musk donated 1.2 million shares of Tesla stock, valued at $254,614,000 at the time, to the Musk Foundation.[12][13][14]

In 2021, Musk donated $5.7 billion in Tesla shares to the foundation.[15][16]
