The Moscow State Mining University is a Russian educational establishment that provides training for those interested in working in the mining industry.

The Moscow Mining Academy was established on September 4th, 1918, and this date serves as the beginning of the institution's existence.

During the time of USSR industrialization, there was a mission in the USSR to train 435,000 engineers and technicians in only five years (1930-1935). In contrast, the number of engineers and technicians in the USSR in 1929 was just 66,000.

By decree of the Supreme Soviet of the National Economy, the Moscow Mining Academy was dismantled and reorganised as a collection of six separate institutions in the year 1930. The Moscow Mining Institute was one of the numerous educational institutions that emerged as a result of the Academy's departments. The Institute was renamed the State University of Mining in 1993 when it underwent this change.

The University has recently adopted a hierarchical system of higher education that is comprised of many levels. The first four years of a university education are referred to as undergraduate studies, and they often culminate in the awarding of a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree. In order to get a bachelor's degree, students must complete coursework in the arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering, in addition to selecting a major, which is their area of academic concentration.

When added to the first level's three years of study, the second level's potential to lead to certification as a chartered mining engineer totals five years. Training of a highly specialised nature at an advanced level is going to be provided to engineers as part of this programme. A graduate with both theoretical and practical expertise in mining operations is required to be a professionally trained mining engineer. This means that the engineer must be familiar with all aspects of mining.

Students who have shown academic excellence throughout their time as undergraduates may be interested in continuing their studies at the graduate level (the third level). The Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree will be granted to the student after they have successfully completed an extra two years of study at the university.
