Michael 'Mick' Clegg (born 27 December 1957) is a power development coach who is best known for the 11 years he spent working at Manchester United F.C.
Born in Dukinfield, Greater Manchester, Clegg spent the early years of his coaching career training his children and working in local gyms. In 1984 he opened Olympic Sports Gym in Ashton-under-Lyne, where his work developed a large local clientele.
After building his reputation in the industry, Manchester United invited Clegg to join their coaching staff in 1998; an offer which he initially refused. In 1999, however, he accepted a second approach and began working with the club's youth team players on a part-time basis. He began working with first team captain Roy Keane in 2000 to assist the Irishman's return to fitness[1], and soon signed a permanent contract to become the club's first Power Development coach.
Clegg spent the next 11 years in the role until departing in 2011. During his time at United he became renowned for his positive impact on the players, most notably playing a prominent role in the physical development of Cristiano Ronaldo[2]. Despite his departure from Old Trafford, Clegg maintained relationships with several United players, including Darren Fletcher, who spent three months of his recuperation from ulcerative colitis training with Clegg at his performance lab in Ashton[3].
Away from football, Clegg has worked closely with athletes in a wide variety of sports, including taekwondo stars Aaron Cook (taekwondo) and Bianca Walkden plus British speedway racers Kyle Howarth and Charles Wright (speedway rider).
In 2022, Clegg released a book chronicling his coaching career, entitled 'The Power & The Glory'. The foreword was written by Ronaldo.
Clegg is father to five children: Michael Clegg (footballer), Mark, Steven, Amanda and Shaun. All five have gone on to become coaches in their own right, while Michael played for Manchester United's first team, Steven represented Manchester United's youth teams, while Mark and Shaun competed internationally in weightlifting.
