Founded in 1892, Manchester United Football Club is an English professional football club headquartered in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. It is now a member of the Premier League, the highest division of English football. The Manchester United Football Club, sometimes known as the Red Devils, was formed in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club before changing its name to Manchester United in 1902. In 1910, the team relocated from Newton Heath to its present stadium, Old Trafford, where it remains today.

In English club football, Manchester United holds the joint-record for the most trophies won, with a total of 20 Premier League crowns, 12 FA Cups, five League Cups, and a total of 21 FA Community Shields to their credit. As a result, they have won the European Cup/UEFA Champions League three times, as well as competitions like as the Europa League, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the Intercontinental Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup, all of which they won once each. After losing eight of its players in the Munich aviation tragedy, they became the first English team to win the European Cup in 1968, under the direction of Matt Busby. This was ten years after the Munich catastrophe claimed the lives of eight of the club's players. Ferguson has been manager of the club for the longest period of time and has been its most successful manager, winning 38 trophies between 1986 and 2013, including 13 league wins, five FA Cups, and two UEFA Champions League crowns. While under Ferguson's guidance, the club achieved a European triple, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League in consecutive seasons for the first time in the history of English football. The club's most recent title, the UEFA Europa League, was won under José Mourinho in 2016–17, making them one of just five teams in history to have won all three of the original UEFA club championships (the Champions League, Europa League, and Cup Winners' Cup).

Manchester United is one of the most popularly supported football teams in the world, and it competes with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Leeds United for the title of Premier League champion. Manchester United was the highest-earning football club in the world in 2016–17, with an annual income of €676.3 million. In 2019, the club was valued at £3.15 billion ($3.81 billion), making it the third most expensive football club in the world behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. It was turned private in 2005 after a purchase by Malcolm Glazer for about £800 million, of which more than £500 million in borrowed money became the club's debt. The club had previously been publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange since its inception in 1991. Since 2012, part of the club's shares have been traded on the New York Stock Exchange, however the Glazer family maintains ultimate ownership and management of the team.
