Laya Mathikshara Mathialagan is an Indian NFT artist,[1] currently studying in high school. She is best known for her digital work involving 3D art, generative art, AR art, and net art. Mathialagan’s art is primarily a reflection of the ‘brain functions of an artist with consciousness and the origin of true creativity’. A lot of her works aim to capture the intersection of Art and Tech.[2][3]

With her digital artworks that are being sold for cryptocurrencies, Mathialagan, at the age of 14 has made over 1 million US dollars.[4] Some of her renowned pieces are - Amerkle, Anything can be art Series, To the moon, What if, Honeycomb was decentralized, Are we made of chaos? Series, Gratitude and Mind Mirror.[5]

Mathialagan has exhibited and screened her work globally at various art galleries and exhibitions such as Ars Electronica, Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art,[6] Azkuna Zentroa, Bikaner House, Labyrinth, Stratosphere, and to name a few. Her work has also been featured on several other platforms including Foundation, Makersplace, Async, Open Sea, Gen.art, and WazirX.

Mathialagan’s work and her strides as a leading NFT artist have also been covered by a number of media outlets such as The Hindu,[7] Deccan Chronicle, CNBC,[8] Hindustan Times,[9] Indian Express,[10] Economic Times,[11] Architectural Digest,[12] and others.

Early life and education

Mathialagan was born in Chennai, India. She completed her secondary education at Sacred Heart Mat. Hr. Sec. School and then enrolled in the Chennai Public School, where she is currently studying in 9th grade.

While growing up, Mathialagan developed a keen interest in painting and began participating in several art galleries from the age of 10. Mathialagan was also fascinated by magic as a child and recorded a number of videos on YouTube demonstrating some of the tricks she had learned. She still enjoys it, but she doesn't have much time to practice and further hone her skills. Apart from that, Mathialagan is also well versed in mathematics and science and has won multiple awards in competitive examinations throughout her school years.

Mathialagan, having worked on several hobby projects eventually inclined towards front-end web development and programming. Up until now, she has experimented with HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Python and recently started using the P5JS tool to make digital art with code.

Career

Mathialagan’s first minted digital artwork was on Rarible and was collected for 0.2 Eth. Since then she has worked on a number of digital artwork projects and gained recognition in the blockchain industry.[13] She designed and hosted Labyrinth - an NFT gallery at the Somnium space metaverse. The gallery hosted over 20 premium artists from across the globe.[14]

Mathialagan’s animated short film - Gratitude dedicated to the Covid Warriors was selected in the 16th Busan International Kids and Youth Film Festival which is hosted in partnership with UNESCO.[15] This short film was also selected for the "All American High school Film festival" - the Oscar[16] for teens and was screened in Times Square, New York. What if, Honeycomb was decentralized, another one of Mathialagan’s artworks, which is a part of the What if series, was showcased in an exhibit in Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. Mathialagan’s works Generative sculpt, Lolly's day out, and Internet Noise were showcased in ARS Electronica 2021.[17]

Several other artworks by Mathialagan were selected to be showcased at the world's largest NFT exhibition - "Stratosphere", which happened in Beijing, China, Bikaner House. She also designed a virtual gallery in Bored Ape Ladies Collective.

On a philanthropic note, Mathialagan’s ‘To the moon’ was featured as a part of the Inspiration4 - the first civilian mission to space launch by SpaceX. The NFT auction started at the take off and ended during touch down of the rocket. Funds raised from the auction benefited to support the St Judes Children's Research Hospital. 5% of funds from Mathialagan’s generative art collection Amerkle was donated to Girls who Code.

Mathialagan currently lives in India with her Mom and Dad. Her elder sister is pursuing her master's degree at Stanford University. She is fluent in Tamil and English.
