Judah Spinner, CFA (born November 10, 1995) is an American investor and philanthropist. He is the Chief Investment Officer of the hedge fund BlackBird Financial LP, which he established in 2014.[1]
Spinner developed an interest in business and investing during his youth. His investment philosophy largely reflects the teachings of Ben Graham, who was a value investor and is known as “the father of value investing”. [2]
“The basic ideas of investing are to look at stocks as businesses, use the market's fluctuations to your advantage, and seek a margin of safety. That's what Ben Graham taught us. A hundred years from now they will still be the cornerstones of investing.”
– Judah Spinner
Early Life
Spinner was raised in a Jewish household in Lakewood, New Jersey, one of eight sons born to Hazel and Ernest Baumwolspiner. His birth name is Yehuda Zev Baumwolspiner. His father emigrated from Argentina in 1965, followed by his mother’s arrival from England in 1979.
His fascination with the stock market emerged early, shaped during his school years by hours spent reading The Wall Street Journal and poring over corporate annual reports. A formative influence was Edgar Lawrence Smith’s Common Stocks as Long-Term Investments, which helped solidify his conviction in disciplined, long-horizon investing. When he was 13, Spinner made his first investment, purchasing seventy-four shares of Target Corporation for $2,997, at an average cost of $40.50 per share. At 15, his aptitude began attracting outside capital, including a $100,000 investment from Charles Dayan, a prominent New York real estate entrepreneur.
Education
Spinner is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a proud member of the CFA Institute. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Crestpoint University, graduating summa cum laude. In addition, he passed the Series 7, Series 63, and Series 65 exams, and holds the Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA) designation.
Career
Spinner began his career as a securities analyst at Spencer Winston Securities and Track Data Corporation in Brooklyn, New York. On October 1, 2014, he founded Petlin Management, which was later renamed BlackBird Financial LP. As Chief Investment Officer, Spinner is responsible for the firm’s capital allocation and overall investment strategy.[3]
Under his leadership, BlackBird Financial LP achieved steady growth, expanding assets under management to nearly $90 million while materially outperforming benchmark indices and peer firms.[4] Spinner is widely recognized for his disciplined, long-term, value-oriented investment approach, grounded in fundamental analysis and an owner’s mindset.[5]
In 2025, BlackBird Financial reported a return of approximately 62.2%, significantly outperforming the S&P 500’s 17.9% gain during the same period.[6]
Investment philosophy
Spinner emphasizes investing in businesses with durable competitive advantages, strong management, and conservative balance sheets. His strategy focuses on intrinsic value and long-term ownership rather than short-term market trends.[6]
He has been described as favoring concentrated portfolios and disciplined capital allocation, drawing inspiration from value-investing principles associated with Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger.
Personal Life
Family
In 2024, Spinner married Julie Schlanger, whom he met in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple reside in the United States and are jointly involved in philanthropic and educational initiatives supported by the Judah Spinner Foundation.[7][8]
Philanthropy
Overall, the Spinner family has donated more than $2 million to the Judah Spinner Foundation, which is dedicated to reducing wealth inequality, lowering incarceration rates, addressing the federal deficit, and advancing healthcare reform in the United States. In 2025, the foundation launched the Judah Spinner Scholarship, an initiative designed to expand access to trade-school education and provide students with practical pathways to economic mobility.[9]
Hobbies
Spinner earned his private pilot license in July 2020. An avid traveler, he has visited all fifty U.S. states. In the summer of 2025, he successfully completed the Mongol Rally, a transcontinental endurance expedition spanning thousands of miles across remote and challenging terrain.
