Isha Ambani (born October 23, 1991) is an Indian businesswoman, philanthropist, and billionaire heiress.[1] She is the managing director of Reliance Retail, subsidiary of Reliance Industries and it is the parent company of all Reliance led retail companies including Reliance Fresh, Hamleys, Reliance Smart, AJIO, Reliance Centro, Zivame, JioMart, Reliance Digital, Urban Ladder, Reliance Trends, Netmeds, Jio Stores, Justdial, and Centro. Ambani is also a member of the board of directors at Reliance Industries and an executive committee member of Reliance Jio Infocomm.[2] She is responsible for divisions and subsidiaries of Reliance Retail.

Isha is widely recognized as a young and dynamic businesswoman who has made significant contributions in the fields of business and philanthropy in India. Her work with the Reliance Foundation has helped improve the lives of many underprivileged people in India, and her contributions to the growth and development of Reliance Industries and Jio have been noteworthy.[3]

Early life and education

Isha was born and raised in Mumbai, India. She was born into one of the most prestigious and wealthiest families in India, the Ambani family. Her father, Mukesh Ambani, is the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, while her mother, Nita Ambani, is the founder of the Reliance Foundation. Isha has a twin brother named Akash Ambani and a younger brother named Anant Ambani.[4]

Isha completed her early education at Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai. She later went on to pursue a degree in psychology and South Asian studies from Yale University in the United States. She further obtained her Master's degree in Business Administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in California.[5]

Career

After completing her studies, Isha started working as a business analyst at McKinsey & Company.[6]

In 2014, Isha returned to India and joined her father's company, Reliance Industries, as a member of the board of directors. She is also a member of the executive committee of Reliance Jio Infocomm, the telecommunications arm of Reliance Industries. She has also played an instrumental role in the development of Jio's digital services and has been at the forefront of the company's initiatives to provide affordable and accessible digital connectivity to millions of people in India.[7]

In December 2015, Isha and her brothers led the employee launch of Jio 4G services in the presence of Ambassador Shahrukh Khan. She is also a part of the executive leadership teams at Reliance Retail, Reliance Jio, Reliance Foundation, and Dhirubhai Ambani International School.

In 2016, Isha launched Ajio, an online fashion brand that is a subsidiary of Reliance Retail. She is the company’s managing director, overseeing the branding and management segments.[8] Under Isha’s leadership, Ajio.com has grown to feature over 2,500 brands and has been a key focus of Reliance Retail's online fashion arm. Ajio has recorded annual sales of $2 billion and commands over 15% of the fashion e-commerce market in India.

In August 2022, Mukesh Ambani appointed Isha Ambani as the new CEO of Reliance Retail. The company was able to have a turnover of Rs 2 lakh crore at that time. As a Reliance Retail partner brand, Jimmy Choo, Georgio Armani, Hugo Boss, Versace, Michael Kors, Brooks Brothers, Armani Exchange, Burberry, and many more international brands are offered in India. Under Isha's leadership, Reliance Retail focused on growth through an aggressive expansion strategy and nearly doubled its valuation from 2020 to 2023. In September 2023, it was announced that Reliance Retail was raising ₹20700 crore at a valuation of ₹8.2 lakh crore.[9]

In July 2023, Ambani made another big announcement: they closed a deal with American apparel brand Gap to market and sell their products in India. Ambani, through Reliance Retail, will be launching over 100 Gap outlets in the country.[10]

As the Executive Director of Reliance Retail, Isha has been instrumental in the development of Jio World Plaza, a shopping and entertainment complex in Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex, inaugurated on November 1, 2023.

Isha has taken a senior role at Jio Financial and is involved in strategic development and implementation for all marketing teams at Reliance Industries.

Personal life

In 2018, Isha Ambani got married to Anand Piramal, the son of industrialist Ajay Piramal. Together, the couple has twin children: a son named Krishna and a daughter named Aadiya. In addition to her business and philanthropic endeavors, Isha is also a trained pianist and has performed at several events.[11]

  • She is also the second-youngest billionaire heiress on the Forbes list, with a net worth of $70 million.
  • Isha has also been credited with the GenNext Entrepreneur Award at the 12th Forbes India Leadership Awards 2023.[12]

Philanthrophy

Isha is the co-founder of the family's philanthropic organization, the Reliance Foundation. She is involved in several initiatives of the Reliance Foundation, which works towards improving the quality of education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities for underprivileged people in India.[13] Under her leadership, the foundation has initiated projects such as publishing a Hindi newspaper in Braille for cornea transplants. Additionally, she is associated with several charitable organizations that aim to empower women, support underprivileged communities, and advocate for mental health awareness.
