Anant Ambani (born April 10, 1995) is an Indian businessman, philanthropist, and animal welfare advocate.[1] He is known for his roles as director on the boards of several prominent companies, including Jio Platforms Limited, Reliance Retail Ventures Limited, Reliance New Energy Limited, and Reliance New Solar Energy Limited.[2] He is the younger son of Mukesh Ambani, managing director and chairman of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), and Nita Ambani, founder of Reliance Foundation.[3]

Anant is actively involved in philanthropic activities, focusing on education and animal welfare. Notably, he established Vantara, a 3,000-acre animal rescue center in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Early life and education

Anant was born and raised in Mumbai, India, into the renowned Ambani family. His father, Mukesh Ambani, is the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, while his mother, Nita Ambani, is the founder of the Reliance Foundation. Anant has an elder brother named Akash Ambani and an elder sister named Isha Ambani.

Anant has battled chronic asthma since age 2, which has significantly influenced his health journey, including his weight and overall well-being.[4] In 2016, he underwent a weight-loss transformation, shedding 108 kilograms in less than 18 months.[5][6]

He completed his early education at Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai and obtained a bachelor's degree from Brown University in Rhode Island, USA.

Career

After graduating from Brown University, Anant joined his family business in 2015. Since then, he has held directorial positions on the boards of subsidiaries of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). Notably, he has been a director on the boards of Jio Platforms Limited since March 2020, Reliance Retail Ventures Limited since May 2022, Reliance New Energy Limited, and Reliance New Solar Energy Limited since June 2021. Additionally, he has served on the board of the Reliance Foundation since September 2022.[7]

Anant is instrumental in driving the expansion of energy and materials businesses within Reliance Industries and its global operations in renewable and green energy sectors. He spearheads initiatives aimed at transitioning Reliance into a net-carbon-zero company by 2035. These include developing world-scale capabilities in producing clean fuels and future materials, advancing next-generation carbon capture and storage technologies, establishing holistic circular materials businesses, and optimizing crude to chemical conversion processes.[8]

Central to this sustainability transition is the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex under construction in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This complex comprises four factories producing solar photovoltaic modules, energy storage batteries, electrolyzers, and fuel cells for converting hydrogen into power.[9][10]

Vantara

Anant is passionate about animal welfare and has established Vantara, a 3,000-acre animal rescue center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. He is recognized as a "walking encyclopedia of animals" due to his profound knowledge and passion for wildlife conservation. Vantara aims to rehabilitate abused and endangered animals by providing state-of-the-art healthcare facilities, research centers, and academic institutions. Vantara is supported by Reliance Industries and the Reliance Foundation and emphasizes wildlife conservation and biodiversity preservation. Over the years, Vantara has rescued over 200 elephants and other species globally, collaborating with organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF).

Personal life

Anant is engaged to Radhika Merchant, with plans for marriage in 2024. Their pre-wedding festivities took place in March 2024 in Jamnagar, Gujarat.[11] Mukesh and Nita Ambani organized the three-day celebration, which took place at the RIL township in Moti Khavdi village. The event included performances by artists such as Rihanna and magician David Blaine. Notable guests included Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Ivanka Trump, Sundar Pichai, and various celebrities and business figures.[12]

In March 2019, Anant became a member of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee, appointed by the Uttarakhand Chief Minister TS Rawat.

Anant is interested in sports, particularly cricket, and is known for supporting various domestic and international cricket events, notably backing the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.[13]

Anant has a penchant for luxury watches and has a collection that includes some of the most prestigious brands in the world, including Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Rolex, and Richard Mille.[14]

He also engages in various philanthropic endeavors, such as providing medical assistance and educational support to underprivileged sections of society.
