A public research institution, ETH Zurich found in the Swiss city of Zürich. The Swiss federal government established it in 1854, and it was modelled after the École polytechnique in Paris, with the stated mission to educate engineers and scientists.

ETH Zurich is a member of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology Domain, which is a consortium of government universities and research institutes that falls under the jurisdiction of the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research. ETH Zurich's sister institution, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), is also a member of this domain. Because it is a public university, it welcomes applications from any citizen or permanent resident of Switzerland who has already completed their secondary education. As of the year 2021, the ETH Zurich has recruited 24,500 students from over 120 countries, of whom 4,460 were seeking PhD degrees.

In academia as well as industry, particularly in the fields of science and technology, ETH Zurich is known for having a reputation that is on par with the very best. It is consistently ranked as one of the top three to five universities in Europe and as one of the top fifteen to twenty institutions in the world. The university was ranked eighth in the world and fourth in Europe in the 2022 edition of the QS World University Rankings for academic excellence. In the 2021 edition, the university was ranked fourth in the world for engineering and technology (second in Europe), and it was ranked first for earth and marine science. In the Times Higher Education Globe University Rankings for 2022-23, ETH Zurich was placed as the 11th best university in the whole world.

Among the students, teachers, and researchers linked with ETH Zurich are 22 Nobel laureates, two Fields Medalists, three Pritzker Prize winners, and one recipient of the Turing Award. Among these individuals are Albert Einstein and John von Neumann. It is a member of the CESAER network in addition to being a founder member of the IDEA League and the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU).
