Early life and education

Carter was born in Anniston, Alabama, and raised in a military family. As the eldest of four siblings, she grew up as an “Army brat,” relocating frequently due to her father’s military assignments. Her father, Master Sergeant Roy Carter, served in the United States Army, and the family’s global postings resulted in Carter attending over thirteen schools across the United States and abroad. These early experiences contributed to her strong adaptability, cultural awareness, and introspective personality—traits that later shaped her interest in science, leadership, and psychology.

She pursued higher education at Alabama A&M University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and Chemistry. She was recognized as both a Distinguished Military Student and Distinguished Military Graduate, commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation. Carter later obtained a Teacher Certificate from the University of South Florida before earning a Master of Arts in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She further pursued advanced studies by completing a Ph.D. in Human Services with a focus on Public Leadership from Capella University. In addition to her academic degrees, she completed executive education programs in Executive Presence at the University of North Florida and Women’s Entrepreneurship at Cornell University.

Career

Military and Federal Service

Following her graduation from Alabama A&M, Carter began her military service as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. She served for six and a half years, including active deployment during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Her time in the military often placed her in leadership roles where she was one of the only African American women officers, experiences that shaped her approach to organizational dynamics, leadership under pressure, and resilience.[11]

After completing her military service, Carter transitioned into civilian professional roles. She worked briefly as a high school science teacher before joining the public sector. Over the years, she held a range of positions including county health inspector, vocational rehabilitation specialist, patient advocate for veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF), field examiner, budget analyst, and financial management analyst. In 2015, she was named a Presidential Management Fellow by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, recognizing her leadership potential in federal service.[12]

Coaching Career

Carter began coaching informally during her military service, mentoring fellow soldiers in personal and career decisions. This early exposure to coaching laid the groundwork for her later career as an executive and career coach. In 2010, she founded JBC Counseling & Consulting, LLC, named in memory of her mother, Jennell Bush Carter. In 2018, she launched Twanna Carter Professional & Personal Coaching, LLC, with a broader focus on executive coaching, career advancement, and professional empowerment.[13]

Her coaching is anchored in her proprietary Thrive Beyond Survival V.I.P. Framework™, a strategic model that guides professionals from surviving to thriving in their careers. The framework emphasizes clarity, confidence, authenticity, and alignment with one’s core values. Carter’s clients include professionals across a range of industries who are navigating career transitions, executive leadership roles, or workplace adversity.[14][15]

She holds the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credential from the International Coaching Federation and is a Certified Executive Coach. She also holds certifications as a Resilience Coach, Anger Management Specialist II, NGH Certified Hypnotherapist, and Safe Spaces Facilitator using the Unbreak My Soul Methodology. Her coaching methodology integrates mindset development, leadership skills, and personal empowerment strategies.[16]
