Capella Institution is an online, private university that is operated for profit and has its main campus in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The majority of the school's instruction is provided via its online platform, which is controlled by the publicly listed company Strategic Education, Inc.

Capella University offers a total of over 1900 online courses across 52 different degree programmes. There are over 38,000 students enrolled, coming from all 50 states as well as 61 other countries. Of these students, approximately 23 percent are engaged in doctorate programmes, 47 percent are enrolled in master's programmes, and 27 percent are enrolled in bachelor's programmes.

Dr. Harold Abel and Stephen Shank laid the groundwork for what would later become Capella University in 1993 by founding what was then known as The Graduate School of America. Shank served as Tonka's previous chief executive officer. Abel, who had previously served as president of Castleton State College, Central Michigan University, and Walden University, was selected to take on the role of the institution's first president.

According to College Navigator, there are 207 full-time teachers and 1,321 part-time educators on Capella's staff.

In order to be considered for admission as an undergraduate student, candidates who do not have any credits that are suitable for transfer are required to satisfactorily pass a university-approved test.

The majority of students enrolled at Capella are pursuing advanced degrees, with MS/MBA students making up 47 percent of the total and PhD/PsyD doctoral students making up 23 percent. The number of students enrolled in Capella's undergraduate programme accounts for 27 percent of the total student body. A percentage that is much lower than one percent are enrolled in certificate programmes. The average age of a Capella University student is 40 years old. Ninety-five percent of students are engaged in classes on a part-time basis, seventy-four percent of students are female, and fifty-four percent of students are from ethnic minorities.

Previous learning assessment programmes, which evaluate students' prior experiences and knowledge to determine whether or not they qualify for college credit, are one of the ways that students may earn credits at Capella University.
