The University of South Florida (USF) is a public research institution that has campuses in Tampa, Florida, as well as St. Petersburg and Sarasota, Florida. The main campus of USF is situated in Tampa. It is a part of the State University System of Florida, which consists of a total of 12 universities. USF is home to 14 schools that together make available more than 240 degree programmes at the undergraduate, graduate, specialist, and doctorate levels. USF has been granted accreditation by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, which places it in the "R1: Doctoral Universities - Extremely high research activity" category of universities. The Florida Board of Governors has recognised the University of South Florida as one of the state's three preeminent research universities.

The institution said that its yearly budget was $2.31 billion in 2022 and that it had an annual economic effect of more than $6 billion. According to the National Science Foundation, the University of South Florida (USF) ranked 43rd in the country and 25th among public colleges in terms of the amount of money it spent on research and development in 2019. The University of South Florida (USF) has an endowment of $889 million, making it the institution with the highest endowment of any American public university that was established after World War II.

In its rating for 2018, the Intellectual Property Owners Association ranked the University of South Florida (USF) in first position in the state of Florida, seventh place in the United States, and sixteenth place in the globe in terms of the number of US patents awarded. The University of South Florida's academics, staff, students, and alumni have been awarded approximately 2,400 patents altogether.

USF's 19 varsity teams have won a combined total of 6 national titles and 160 conference championships. A total of 206 individual and relay conference titles in addition to an additional 22 individual and relay national championships have been won by athletes competing for the Bulls.
