Early life and Career

Jon Ver Halen was born in Los Angeles, California. He was raised in southern California, and was an active swimmer, water polo player, and ranked amateur surfer.

Dr. Ver Halen attended the University of California at Los Angeles, where he graduated with multiple honors. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature, and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. While at UCLA, he was on the men’s swimming and crew teams. He participated multiple years in the United States Men’s Lightweight selection camp teams, winning gold medals at the Canadian Henley and American Rowing Championships. He was also active in the UCLA student council.

He then went to Harvard Medical School, where he earned degrees from both Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology while attending the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. He published his thesis on “Achievement of porcine hematopoiesis in mice without genetic manipulation” under the direction of Dr. Megan Sykes at the Transplantation Biology Research Center. He also participated in the MIT Entrepreneurial Competition, where his team placed in the semi-finals.

After medical school, Dr. Ver Halen completed his residency training in general surgery and plastic surgery at the University of Washington, in Seattle Washington. While in Seattle, he participated in the care of John Otter, a well known individual who heroically survived a bear attack while protecting his daughter. He then completed a fellowship and Clinical Instructor in Microvascular Surgery at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

After residency, he moved to Memphis, TN and joined the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Tennessee as an Assistant Professor. He subsequently joined the Baptist Medical Group and the Baptist Cancer Center. He worked at the Regional Medical Center and Burn Center, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Methodist University Hospital, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, and numerous other facilities while in Memphis. He was the Program Director for the Microvascular Surgery Fellowship while in Memphis. Other honors including the Board of Directors for the Memphis Medical Society and the Leadership Development Program for the Tennessee Medical Society. He also completed his Clinical Investigator degree at the University of Tennessee at that time. While in Memphis, he was an active triathlete and completed two full-length Ironman competitions.

He then moved to Texas to work at Baylor Scott and White in Temple Texas. While there, he was an Associate Professor with the Texas A&M School of Medicine. He was also Associate Program Director for the Plastic Surgery Residency training program.

He subsequently moved to Dallas to start his own private practice and business. He has recently enrolled at the South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas, and plans to employ his unique experiences and background to assist patients and clients of diverse backgrounds.
