Dipika Gupta (born 20 June 1976) is a Canadian fashion designer and entrepreneur. She is the founder of KAVI KAVI Fashion Brand, a Toronto-based fashion design company globally known for its contemporary luxury womenswear. The brand offers a stunning collection of feminine and masculine-inspired wearable ensembles made from high-quality fabrics and hand-embroidered by Indian artisans.[1]

Most of Gupta’s collections are inspired by world history, art, and street culture and are ethically sourced. Gupta is a strong proponent of protecting the environment and actively instills eco-friendly practices in designing her collection. Her collections have been showcased at French Music Awards and during the 2007 L'Oreal Toronto Fashion Week.[2]

Early life and education

Gupta was born in Zambia on June 20, 1976. She grew up in India before relocating to Ontario, Canada in the 1980s. Gupta learnt to sew from her mother when she was 12 years old and sold her first pair of pants. She attended George Brown College and the University of Toronto to study accounting and economics, as well as fashion design.

Career

Gupta created KAVI KAVI, a Fashion Design Company, with her sisters Monika and Ravika Gupta after completing her formal schooling. Her debut swimsuit line was a hit at Toronto Fashion Week, and she went on to design a number of ready-to-wear collections for the runway shows at Toronto Fashion Week. Her line was sold in stores across North America, including Montreal, New York City, and San Francisco.[3]

Gupta’s designs, a mix of simplicity and complexity, are driven by shapes, colors and textures. The themes and colors are frequently guided by the themes and stories that run across her collections. She still respects Hip Hop culture and street fashion, allowing it to influence the way she designs. She also incorporates a dogma of a sourcing process to manufacture with an ethical perspective.[4]

KAVI KAVI Couture dress was a Red Carpet hit at the French Music Awards in 2017 worn by French Actress Vanessa Pilon.[5] It was featured in Elle Quebec and Ottawa Citizen. Prior to that Gupta’s collections were also worn by models in the L'Oreal Toronto Fashion Week Fall 2007 hosted at Liberty Grand in Toronto, Ontario, Canada that were shot by the renowned photographer George Pimentel.

Gupta has recently launched her Cruelty-Free, Paraben-Free Vegan Beauty line, which will comprise cosmetics and skin care.

Personal life

Gupta is fluent in English, Hindi and French.
