The city of "San Francisco" serves as a cultural, commercial, and financial hub for the state of California. It is located in Northern California and has a population of 873,965. It has a land area of approximately 46.9 square miles (121 square kilometres), with the majority of it located at the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area, making it the second most densely populated large city in the United States and the fifth most densely populated county in the United States. It has 4.7 million inhabitants and is the 12th-largest metropolitan statistical area in the United States in terms of population, and the fourth-largest in terms of economic production, with a gross domestic product of $592 billion in 2019. With San Jose, California, it comprises the San Jose–San Francisco–Oakland, CA Combined Statistical Area, which has 9.6 million inhabitants as of 2019. It is the sixth most populous combined statistical area in the United States, behind New York City and Los Angeles. San Francisco is known by a variety of nicknames, including SF, San Fran, The City, and Frisco.
