Charles "Chuck" Nabit is an American investor, business executive, and philanthropist. He is the managing partner of Westport Group, chairman and chief executive officer of Southport Financial, LLC, and president of The Nabit Foundation.[1]
Early life and education
Nabit graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in English from the University of the South in 1977. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and the Order of Gownsmen Academic Society.
He earned his Juris Doctor from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law (now William & Mary Law School) in 1980, graduating ninth in his class with a 3.5 GPA. During his legal studies, Nabit served as an associate editor of the William & Mary Law Review and authored an article on enforcement of judgments and liens in Virginia. He was a member of the Order of the Coif honor society and received multiple American Jurisprudence Book Awards.
Career
Nabit began his career at the law firm of Venable, Baetjer, and Howard in Baltimore, Maryland, where he specialized in corporate and real estate law. His work covered diverse areas such as commercial development, zoning laws, civil litigation, and tax appeals.[2]
In 1983, Nabit left the practice of law and formed the Westport Group as its managing partner, overseeing investments in real estate, marketable securities, and business ventures.[3]
In 1985, Nabit became president of Maryland Treatment Centers, Inc., focusing on provision of drug and alcohol treatment services through a network of inpatient and out patient facilities.[4]
In 1990, Nabit founded Developmental Disability Management Services (DDMS), LLC, serving as chairman and CEO for 30 years. Under his leadership, DDMS became a leading provider of financial and operational support to facilities for adults with developmental disabilities. His healthcare work also encompassed long-term care, psychiatric services, home healthcare, hospice, rehabilitation, and pharmacy operations.
In 1999, Nabit founded Southport Financial, LLC, an e-commerce firm specializing in electronic document creation, storage, and retrieval for clients in the financial and healthcare sectors.
In 2010, Nabit founded Diversified Health Services, entering into the field of hospice operations and end-of-life services and supports.[5]
Nabit has remained passionately committed to pursuing healthcare investments of all types throughout his career. This broad spectrum of investment interests ranges from provision of goods and services to the national retail pharmacy industry to strategic investments in esoteric and important biotechnology advancements addressing cancer treatments.[6]
Throughout, there has been an unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence in each of these investments.
Philanthropy
Nabit has been actively involved with philanthropic endeavors throughout his life. He is the president of The Nabit Foundation (insert link), a private family foundation he established in 1992 to support a wide variety of charitable causes in the areas of education, healthcare and the arts. The cumulative grants and donations of the Nabit Foundation exceed $10,000,000.
Mr. Nabit formed The Great Chesapeake Bay Swim, Inc. (insert link) in 1991 as a non-profit entity to stage the 4.4 mile swim between the twin spans of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, benefiting the March of Dimes, the Chesapeake Bay Trust and numerous other worthwhile charities. Since its inception, the Swim has generated in excess of $3,000,000 for charitable causes.
In 2009, Nabit created Mission Driven Dining, Inc. (insert link) to open and operate a restaurant in partnership with the Living Classrooms Foundation at their Fells Point campus that provides employment opportunities for previously incarcerated individuals as well as life skills development for inner city middle school children. The restaurant and catering operation has successfully operated for 15 years.
In addition to these efforts, Mr. Nabit has dedicated himself to Board service on numerous charitable organizations including the following:
- The University of the South Board of Regents, as a member and Chairperson.
- The Walters Art Museum, as a member and officer.
- The B&O Railway Museum, as a member and officer.
- The University of Maryland Hospital for Children.
- The Baltimore Council on Foreign Affairs.
Personal life
Nabit resides in Deerfield Beach, Florida, with his wife and two children. He also maintains homes in Baltimore, Maryland and Sewanee, Tennessee.
