Artell Smith is an American author, educator, and management consultant. He is the founder and CEO of WatchWorks Management Consulting LLC, based in southeast Wisconsin, United States. Smith is the author or co-author of seven books.[1]
Early life and education
Smith was born in 1960 in Passaic, New Jersey, to Franklin Artell Smith, Ph.D. (1902-1976)[2] and Lois Crisbacher Smith, Ph.D. (1935-). Franklin and Lois had distinguished careers in pharmaceutical research and academia, respectively. Upon Franklin’s retirement in 1964, the Smith Family moved from Northern New Jersey to Upstate New York.
Settling in Brunswick, New York, 25 miles west of the Vermont border, Smith attended the Brittonkill Central School District, graduating from Tamarac High School in 1978. Smith participated in various extracurricular activities while in high school, including choir, biology club, and student government, where he served as parliamentarian and co-editor and chief of the yearbook in his senior year. Smith also was a statistician for Tamarac’s Track & Field and Basketball Teams.
Smith attended Union College in Schenectady, New York, from 1978-1979, after which he transferred to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He graduated from BYU in August 1981 with a B.A. in History and Political Science.[3]
Between 1981 and 1983, Smith served a mission for the Mormon Church in the France Paris Mission. He returned to BYU after his mission and earned a Master of Public Administration in 1985. Upon graduation, he was named the Stuart L. Grown Outstanding MPA Student. Smith was also a member of the BYU Men’s Chorus during the final year of his graduate program under the direction of Mack Wilberg, Ph.D., currently the music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on Temple Square.
Professional career
Smith has had a comprehensive career in business and human resources, taking on leadership roles in large, diverse organizations. He has expertise in many HR areas, including executive support, talent management, operations, employee engagement, and recruitment. Smith is skilled in leading major global projects.
Smith now teaches and consults at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Wisconsin School of Business, Center for Professional & Executive Development.
Most recently, Smith was the Vice President of Human Resources at Quad (formerly Quad/Graphics), a major digital media and printing company. He held key positions at BlueSoHo, a division of Quad/Graphics. His past roles include executive positions at Aon plc and its subsidiary Aon Hewitt, as well as at Hewitt Associates and Fidelity Investments. Earlier in his career, he worked at ExxonMobil. Artell retired from Aon plc in 2013 and from Quad/Graphics in 2023.[3]
Books
Smith began writing in 2022 with the encouragement of his long-time mentor, Steven Dale King. Making up for lost time, Artell published four books in 2023, two in 2024, with two more forthcoming.

Personal life
In 1990, Smith married the former Susan Burns (b. 1952-) and had two sons together, Preston Artell Smith (b. 1991-) and Troy Artell Smith (b. 1992-).
Susan and Artell both had careers in human resources, having met while they were employed by ExxonMobil. Susan earned a B.S. in Business Technology from the University of Houston in 1992. Over their 35 years of marriage, they have lived in Houston, TX; Dallas, TX; Cincinnati, OH; Wyndham, N.H.; Gurnee, IL; Vernon Hills, IL; and Kenosha, WI. Susan and Artell share a love for music.
Preston Artell Smith is a noted sommelier in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Carthage College with a double major in Theatre and Musical Theatre. Preston also earned a master’s degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, Scotland.
Troy Artell Smith is a human resources manager for the State of Wisconsin, Department of Corrections. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin—Whitewater, majoring in Psychology. Troy also earned a master’s degree in human resources from Capella University. Troy serves his country as a Captain in the Army National Guard for the State of Wisconsin.[5] He and his father, Artell, are co-authors of Taj’s Sabbatical and the forthcoming Festival City.
