Web traffic refers to the quantity of data that is transmitted to and received by a website from its visitors. Since the middle of the 1990s, web traffic has consistently constituted the majority of all Internet traffic. This outcome is dependent on the total number of users that visited the website and the total number of pages they saw. Sites keep an eye on both their incoming and outgoing traffic in order to determine which sections or pages of their website are the most popular and whether or not there are any discernible patterns, such as a certain page being read mostly by residents of a certain nation. There are a number of different methods that may be used to monitor this traffic, and the information that is acquired can be used to assist in the construction of websites, identify potential security issues, or signal a possible shortage of bandwidth.

Not all of the visitors to a website is appreciated. Some businesses provide advertising opportunities that, in exchange for an increase in web traffic (visitors), pay for screen space on the website.

In addition, websites often have the objective of growing their online traffic via the inclusion of their content on search engines and by the optimization of their content for search engines.
