A website (also known as a web site) is a collection of web pages and associated information that is recognised by a common domain name and published on at least one web server. A website is sometimes referred to as a web portal. Examples include wikipedia.org, google.com, and amazon.com, among others.

The World Wide Web is made up of all publicly accessible websites that are linked together. Other types of websites, such as a company's internal website that can only be viewed via a private network, are available on a private network as well.

Typically, websites are devoted to a certain subject or goal, such as news, education, business, entertainment, or social networking, among other things. The navigation of a website is aided by the use of hyperlinks between pages, which is often started with the main page.

Websites may be accessed using a variety of devices, including desktop computers, laptop computers, tablets, and smartphones. A web browser is the application that is utilised on these devices.

The World Wide Web (WWW) was founded in 1989 by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee, who worked at CERN in Geneva. CERN stated on April 30, 1993, that the World Wide Web will be available to anybody for the use of any computer, hence contributing to the enormous expansion of the Internet. To access individual files from a server prior to the advent of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), alternative protocols such as File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and the gopher protocol were used. These protocols provide a straightforward directory structure through which the user may travel and from which they can choose files to download. Documents were most often given as plain text files with no formatting or as word processor forms encoded in plain text files.
