Lukwago Tonny (born September 4, 2001), professionally known as Waya Boy, is a Ugandan musician, actor, dancer, choreographer, and songwriter.[1] He is the founder and CEO of Waya Boy Music Worldwide and Isong Records. Waya Boy is known for blending traditional Ugandan music with modern genres such as Afropop, Afrobeats, R&B, and Dancehall.[2][3]
Early life and education
Waya Boy was born at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, to the late Mr. Kiggundu Joseph and Mrs. Nakibilango Annet. He grew up alongside his siblings, Nakiwuge Florence and Lukwago Patrick.
He attended St. Maria Goretti Secondary School Katende, Nsangi Secondary School Nsangi, and Bukland High School Nsangi. After completing his formal education, Waya Boy pursued skills in digital marketing, computer software, and automotive mechanics, demonstrating a multifaceted approach to his career.
Career
Waya Boy started his music career in 2020. His debut single, Hullo (2022), gained significant attention and marked his entry into the Ugandan music scene.[4] The song's success was followed by the release of its music video in 2023. His subsequent single, Party Time, solidified his reputation as a rising star in Africa.[5]
Waya Boy blends traditional Ugandan music with contemporary sounds.[6] His lyrics convey heartfelt and thought-provoking messages, resonating with a diverse audience. He is regarded as one of the most promising young artists in the region.[7]
Waya Boy is known for his stage presence and dance and acting skills.[8] He has performed at various events, including the Kampala Art Biennale, Laba Arts Festival, and Nyege Nyege Festival.[9]
He is the founder and CEO of Waya Boy Music Worldwide and Isong Records, through which he supports and promotes artists.[10]
