Toomaj Salehi is an Iranian hip hop rapper. His songs are considered protest rap and themed around social issues faced by Iranian peoples|Iranians.[1][2]
On Sunday 12 September 2021, he was arrested[3][4] by Ministry of Intelligence (Iran)|Iranian intelligence officers and taken to an undisclosed location.[5] His family voiced their concerns about his safety.[6][7] Iran's officials have not given a reason for his arrest. According to his lawyer, "his father was told unofficially that Toomaj is accused of Propaganda in Iran|propaganda against the regime".[8][9][10][11] He was released on bail from Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan at 21 September 2021.[12]
Reactions to his arrest
On 14 September, prominent Iranian rapper Hichkas advocated for his release and asked people to "be his voice".[13][14][15]
Amnesty International called for immediate release of Toomaj unconditionally.[16] Amnesty International tweeted "Iran's authorities must immediately and unconditionally release #TomajSalehi, a dissident rap artist detained solely for exercising his right to freedom of expression. In his songs, he spoke out against repression, corruption, poverty and impunity & called for accountability."[17]
