Thomas Tong
Thomas Tong is an entrepreneur and environmental advocate known for his work in the plastic recycling industry and circular economy development. He serves as Chief Executive Officer for Asia Pacific at ENMA Group Asia Pacific, a company specializing in plastic recycling machinery and integrated waste processing systems.[1]
Early life and background
Tong's interest in plastic recycling is described as originating from his childhood experiences observing the transformation potential of waste plastics during his daily commute to school. This early exposure influenced his later professional focus on recycling and material reuse.
Career
In 2008, ENMA expanded into the Chinese market through a merger with a Shanghai-based plastic crushing equipment company, forming ENMA Machinery (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. Tong became a shareholder and assumed leadership responsibilities for the Asia Pacific region.[2]
Under his leadership, ENMA developed into a global supplier of plastic recycling equipment covering sorting, crushing, washing, and pelletizing systems. The company established international presence in countries including Japan, the United Kingdom, Hungary, and the United States.[3]
Innovation and industry development
Tong has promoted modular recycling technology designed to reduce barriers to entry in the recycling industry. He has emphasized aligning recycling technology with industrial-scale demand and improving efficiency in waste plastic processing.
In 2025, he was associated with the development of a new generation of single-shaft shredders that received international industrial design awards.
Environmental advocacy
Tong advocates for circular economy principles based on the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” framework. He argues that plastic waste should be viewed as a reusable resource and emphasizes the importance of closed-loop recycling systems.
He also promotes public participation in waste sorting and environmental awareness as essential components of effective recycling systems.
Publications
Tong is the author of Plastic Transformation: The Future (also referenced as Shaping the Future through Plastics), which discusses global plastic pollution, recycling technologies, and circular economy models.
The book promotes the idea that plastics retain value when continuously recycled through structured systems and highlights mechanical and chemical recycling processes.
Impact
Tong’s work has contributed to discussions on industrial recycling systems and circular economy development. His initiatives focus on:
- Expansion of plastic recycling infrastructure
- Development of bottle-to-bottle recycling systems
- Promotion of modular recycling equipment
- Integration of recycled plastics into consumer and industrial products
