Steve Butler (born February 10, 1970) is a British entrepreneur, author, and speaker with over 35 years of experience in the financial services sector, particularly in fintech, pensions, and investments. He is the founder and managing director of Pension Potential, a digital platform for retirement guidance and advice.[1][2]

Butler is an accomplished author, having written four books and contributed numerous academic articles to a variety of publications.[3] He is a sought-after speaker on intergenerational work, retirement, and business management for older employees. Additionally, Butler has been featured in interviews on various podcasts and media outlets, showcasing his expertise and insights in these areas.[4]

Early life and education

Butler was born on February 10, 1970, in Romsey, Hampshire. He attended Wildern Secondary School and Barton Peveril Sixth Form College, completing his secondary education at age 18.

In 2002, Butler pursued a Master of Business Administration at Solent University, Southampton. He later earned a Professional Masters in Business Administration from Winchester University's Center for Responsible Management in 2024, with his research focusing on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on different generations in the workplace.[5][6]

Additionally, Butler is a Chartered Manager and Companion of the Chartered Management Institute (CMgr CCMI).

Career

Steve Butler began his career in 1988 as a broker consultant at AXA Equity & Law. In 1992, he became business development manager for South America at Royal Life International.[7][8]

In 1996, Butler joined Scottish Widows as head of international sales and marketing, managing a team of eight investment specialists. At Scottish Widows, Butler encountered the challenges of managing older, more experienced workers and the complexities of overseeing remote team members located across the UK. In 2001, he became head of European business development at Russell Mellon CAPS.[9]

In 2003, Butler founded CAMRADATA, a digital institutional investment manager research platform, which was later acquired by With Intelligence in December 2022.[10][11]

In 2015, he established Punter Southall Aspire, an employee benefits consulting and financial planning business, which was acquired by Foster Denovo in January 2024.[12]

In 2023, he founded Pension Potential, a digital at-retirement guidance and advice solution aimed at helping individuals maximise their retirement income.[13]

Butler is a prolific writer and speaker on intergenerational working, inclusive culture, retirement, and older worker business management issues. He has published four business books and contributed to a number of academic papers. In September 2019, he released his debut publication, "Manage the Gap: Achieving Success with Intergenerational Teams." Other notable works include "The Midlife Review: A Guide to Work, Wealth, and Wellbeing" (2020), "The Diversity Project: Accelerating Progress Towards an Inclusive Culture in the Investment and Savings Industry" (2021), and "Inclusive Culture: Leading Change Across Organizations and Industries" (2021).[14]

Additionally, Butler has authored articles for publications such as HRD Connect, Funds Europe, Employer News, HR Director Magazine, Cover Magazine, Employee Benefits, Parliamentary Review, Irish Tech Time, We are the City, The People Space, New Business Magazine, and others, covering a wide range of topics related to diversity, inclusion, age diversity, and workplace culture. He has also been featured in press and reviews, including the Sunday Times and Financial Times, and has appeared on various podcasts and radio shows.[15]

Butler serves as a Visiting Industrial Fellow at Oxford Brookes Business School, where he supports staff and students on topics related to entrepreneurship, SME funding, equality, diversity, inclusion, and managing intergenerational teams.[16][17]

Philanthropy

Butler has been actively involved in various charitable and advisory roles. He is a Trustee Board Member at the Centre for Ageing Better, an independent charitable foundation focused on tackling age inequalities by improving homes and workplaces for older individuals and promoting positive attitudes towards ageing.[18]

He also serves as an Advisory Board Member and Co-Lead of the 50+ Resource Group at the Diversity Project, which aims to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the UK investment and savings industry.[19]

Additionally, Butler was a Trustee Board Member at The Money Charity, an independent financial education charity, from May 2019 to January 2024.[20]
