Sarah Jane Justice is an Australian author, poet, singer, songwriter, spoken word artist, and voice actor based in Adelaide, South Australia. She writes across various genres, including lyrical poetry, fiction, and whimsical character pieces. She has written 11 books, including "It Calls From the Sky: Terrifying Tales from Above," "Lockdown: Horror #2," "Murder and Machinery," and "Revolutions," among others.[1][2]

Justice has released four studio albums of original music. She has written, produced, and performed a science-fiction-themed cabaret show titled "Sigh-Fi" for the 2016 Adelaide Fringe Festival. Justice has collaborated with photographer Phillip Walker on the mixed-media exhibition "Cracks in Our Shadows."[3]

She is a spoken word artist, having performed at events such as Adelaide Writer's Week and the Australian Poetry Slam's National Finals at the Sydney Opera House. She won the Northern Fringes Poetry Slam in 2020, the Salisbury Fringe Poetry Slam in 2019, and the SA State Champion in the Australian Poetry Slam in 2018.[4]

Early life and education

Justice was born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia. She began writing poems and stories at a young age. Justice earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Newcastle. She participated in various journalism projects during her university years, such as serving as the official media for the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2019, conducting interviews, writing press releases, and pitching articles to media outlets.

Justice has received classical training in voice, piano, and saxophone. She has also received training in musical theater, improvisation, classical acting, and playwright development. As a teenager, she participated in numerous musical theater productions. At eighteen, Justice joined the ska band Rubix Cuba as a saxophonist, performing and touring across Australia and New Zealand for two years.

Career

Justice began her career as a singer-songwriter in 2014 under the name "The Lonely Kids." She has since released four studio recordings: "The Lonely Kids" (2015), "Infatuation (And Other Bad Habits)" (2015), "The Trouble With Waking Up" (2016), and "Rubbed Away (B-Sides and Demos)" (2020). In 2016, she wrote and performed a science fiction cabaret show, "Sigh-Fi," at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.[5][6]

Various journals and collections, such as Hawk and Cleaver, Black Hare Press, and Eerie River Publishing, have featured Justice's poetry and short fiction. She has written over 30 short fiction stories, including "It Calls From the Sky: Terrifying Tales from Above," "Lockdown: Horror #2," "Murder and Machinery," and "Revolutions." In March 2017, she was a poet-in-residence at the Adelaide City Library.[7]

In 2018, Justice was a national finalist at the Australian Poetry Slam at the Sydney Opera House. She has performed at events such as Adelaide Writers' Week and the National Finals of the Australian Poetry Slam. Justice was also the host and emcee for the "Hear Me Roar" showcase at Adelaide Writers' Week in 2022.[8]

In November 2020, Justice collaborated with photographer Phillip Walker on the mixed media exhibition Cracks in Our Shadows, displayed at Mixed Creative in Port Adelaide.[9]

Since 2021, Justice has been a member of South Australia's primary spoken word organization, Spoken Word SA, where she manages events, acts as MC, and coordinates between artists and organizers.[10][11]

Awards and recognitions

Sarah Jane Justice has received various awards and competition titles throughout her career.

  • In 2022, she was a finalist in the Shallow Waters December Flash Fiction Contest for "Some Items are Display Only."
  • She received a mention in Round One of the NYC Midnight Rhyming Story Contest for "The Horses' Birthday."
  • She was nominated for a Pushcart Prize for "Chlorine," published in Synkroniciti.
  • She was also a finalist in the 2021 Shallow Waters August Flash Fiction Contest for "The Children" and won the Synkroniciti Short Story Contest for "Chlorine."
  • In 2020, she received a mention in the Black Fox Writing Contest for "Regret."
  • She was the SA State Finalist in the Australian Poetry Slam in 2020.
  • She won the Northern Fringes Poetry Slam in 2020.
  • In 2019, Justice was listed for the Sydney Hammond Memorial Prize for "Perfect Match.”
  • She won the Salisbury Fringe Poetry Slam in 2019.
  • In 2018, she was the SA State Champion in the Australian Poetry Slam.
  • Justice won the Goolwa Poetry Cup in 2017.
  • She received the People’s Choice award at the Goolwa Poetry Cup in 2016.
  • In 2016, Justice reached the National Top 30 in the Listen Up Australia Songwriting Competition for "Illuminate."
