San Francisco State Institution is a public research university that is located in San Francisco. It is also usually referred to as San Francisco State University, SF State, and SFSU. The institution, which is one of the 23 campuses that make up the California State University system, is divided into six academic colleges and provides a total of 118 different bachelor's degrees, 94 master's degrees, and 5 doctorate degrees, in addition to 26 distinct teaching certificates. It is categorised as an R2 university, which stands for "Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity."

The institution that is now known as the university was first established in 1899 as a state-run normal school for the purpose of educating school teachers. It became a state college in 1921 and a state university in 1972. The 141-acre campus may be found in the southwestern portion of the city, which is just a little over three kilometres from the Pacific shore. There are twelve varsity sports teams at San Francisco State University. These teams play at the NCAA Division II level, with the majority of them being members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association. It is possible for San Francisco State University to be classified as an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving school in addition to its current status as a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) (AANAPISI).

There have been 21 Pulitzer Prize winners, 16 Academy Award winners, 49 Emmy Award winners, 10 Grammy Award winners, 12 Tony Award laureates, and 4 billionaires among San Francisco State's past and current teachers and graduates. There has also been one astronaut who attended San Francisco State.

The institution confers bachelor's degrees in 115 different fields of study, master's degrees in 97, and an Ed.D. in educational leadership. Together with the University of California, Berkeley, it provides a PhD degree in education with a focus on special education. Additionally, it collaborates with the University of California, San Francisco to provide two doctoral programmes in physical therapy.

At San Francisco State University, the ratio of students to teachers is 23 to 1, and 27.1 percent of the university's courses have less than 20 pupils.
