Sabeer Nelli is an American entrepreneur known for his contributions to the oil market and fintech industry.[1][2] He is the president of Tyler Petroleum Inc. and the founder and CEO of Zil Money Corporation,[3] a financial technology firm streamlining financial workflows for businesses. He is also the founder and CEO of OnlineCheckWriter.com and ZilBank.com, offering comprehensive financial management solutions.[4]
Early life and education
Nelli was born and raised in Manjeri, Malappuram, Kerala. He displayed an early entrepreneurial spirit, shaped by his parents' philosophy to disregard external opinions. Throughout his formative years, Nelli engaged in various activities such as selling mangoes, candies, and peanuts, farming, and managing a cooking gas store. He also sold tea, coffee, snacks at fairs, and popsicles at various venues during his school years.
In 2001, Nelli earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Tyler. He furthered his education with an advanced fintech course at Harvard University.
Career
In 1999, Nelli started his career as an airline pilot with Jet Airways. In 2004, Nelli volunteered for the City of Tyler Police Department in Texas.
Entrepreneurship
In 2005, Nelli established TylerPetroleum.com, which operates Tyler Petroleum Country Stores, serving as fuel stations with attached convenience stores and larger Tyler Petroleum Travel Stops located on interstate highways. These travel stops offer various amenities, including food from national restaurant chains, trucking supplies, showers, laundry services, tire care centers, and RV dump stations. The company has ranked as one of the fastest-growing private companies in America, according to Inc.com. In 2018, Tyler Petroleum opened an overseas office in India, focused on improving the customer experience by developing software and providing 24/7 customer service.[5][6]
Nelli encountered challenges in managing diverse payment preferences among stakeholders in his business. He founded Zil Money Corporation in 2018, a financial technology company optimizing financial workflows for businesses of all sizes. Following its inception, Nelli formed subsidiaries, namely OnlineCheckWriter.com and ZilBank.com, where he serves as the founder and CEO.[7][8]
ZilBank.com is a digital banking platform for business owners, offering banking services through FDIC-insured partner banks. The platform ensures a seamless banking experience, featuring zero monthly fees, ATM access, and effortless credit building. It is linked with OnlineCheckWriter.com, a cloud-based payment platform streamlining accounts payable and receivable. OnlineCheckWriter.com provides various payment options, including printable checks, e-checks, mail-in checks, credit, debit, ACH, wallet-to-wallet, and wire transfers. The platform also includes account management features, such as synchronization with leading accounting platforms and simplifying bookkeeping, taxes, and related processes.
In 2023, Nelli initiated a startup accelerator program with $1 million in funding,[9] aiming to establish Manjeri as a startup hub.[10] In November 2023, he organized Zilckathon, a tech talent search program in collaboration with 'Zil Money Corporation' and 'Malayala Manorama' in Malappuram.[11] The platform enabled participants to translate innovative tech ideas into practical solutions for real-world challenges. Selected startups received Rs 1 crore each in funding, exchanging a percentage of their shares for the investment.
Nelli aims to transform Manjeri into a technological innovation center, colloquially referred to as "Silicon Jeri."[12][13][14] Zil Money Corporation is investing in the establishment of "Zil Park," a state-of-the-art technology park modeled after Apple Park in Silicon Valley. This initiative aims to create a world-class infrastructure similar to tech parks in the United States. The project's objective is to attract top talent and companies to Manjeri, providing a platform for innovation, research, and development.
Memberships
Nelli holds memberships in several organizations, such as the US Faster Payment Council and Nacha for ACH transaction regulation. He is also a member of the Business Payment Coalition of the Federal Reserve System and the Federal Reserve Fednow Community. In 2017, he joined the Forbes Business Council.[15]
