Located in Waterbury, Connecticut, Post University is a non-public institution that is operated for profit. Post College was first established in the year 1890. Teikyo Post University was the name given to the institution when it maintained its connection to Teikyo University in Tokyo, Japan, which lasted from 1990 to 2004. The university has over 25 undergraduate and graduate programmes that may be completed during the day, in the evening, or entirely online. The vast majority of the institution's students choose to complete their studies entirely online. It also has locations in Danbury and Wallingford as satellites of its main office.

Matoon Shorthand School, the forerunner of what is now Post University, was established in 1890. The school provided instruction in a variety of areas, including typing, accounting, and business writing, among other topics. In the year 1897, Harry C. Post purchased the institution, renamed it Waterbury Business College, and took the position of the college's first principal after making the purchase. In 1931, the institution went through yet another name change, this time to Post College; it would continue to use that name until 1990.

Have the size of Post College's campus and the range of programmes it provides both continuing to expand. The school made the transfer to its present home on Country Club Road in Waterbury, Connecticut, in the year 1965. The position of chair of the board of trustees has been given to Harold B. Leever. In his honour, the Leever Student Center was given its current name. The library was named after Rose Traurig and was part of the most recent phase of the institution's expansion. The school launched its first location outside of its main campus in Meriden, Connecticut, in the year 1970.

Post College expanded its academic offerings to include four-year degrees in 1976, when it also became a four-year school and started providing expedited degree programmes for Vietnam war veterans. The institution first started awarding bachelor's degrees in 1980, and only a few years later, it purchased the athletic facilities necessary to host both men's and women's varsity sports teams.

Teikyo Post University was once known as Teikyo University until it changed its name to reflect its new affiliation with Teikyo University in the 1990s. The university began offering new online courses and welcomed a large number of students from other countries.

In 2004, the institution became known as Post University as it transitioned to a new board of trustees. The university increased the number of graduate-level offerings and programmes in the liberal arts. The first completely online Master of Business Administration degree programme in the state of Connecticut was provided by Post University in the year 2007. In 2012, the name of the business school was changed to the Malcolm Baldrige School of Business in honour of Malcolm Baldrige, Jr., a former secretary of commerce for the United States of America.

American Sentinel University is a private, for-profit university that has 1400 undergraduate students and 1300 graduate students. In 2021, Post University made public its plans to buy American Sentinel University. The name of the institution will eventually be changed to the American Sentinel College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Post University.
