Biography

Pemba is a Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer born in 1980 in a small remote village in the Himalayan mountains called Patle, in the district of Okhaldhunga in Nepal. As most people in Patle, Pemba’s parents are farmers and Pemba worked as a farmer himself until he decided to pursue his dream of climbing mountains. He started his mountaineering career as a porter at age 15, advanced to working as a chef responsible for the kitchen on expeditions until he eventually became an assistant guide and finally mountaineering guide. On the 23rd of May 2008, Pemba made it to the top of Mount Everest for the first time, 28 years old. Since then he has summited the top of the world 8 times from both south and north side.[1]

In 2016 he was the first Nepali ever to climb solo to the top of Mount Everest, carrying a signed match football for the Liverpool F.C and a Carlsberg Group flag.[2]

Today Pemba is the owner and chairman of the successful adventure company Adventure Ascent, offering expeditions around the Everest and Annapurna region.[3]

Movies

In 2015, Pemba got the chance to play the role of Lopsang in Hollywood movie Everest.[4]

Social projects

Pemba is a true philanthropist and has founded Ascent Aid Nepal (non-profit organization). With the help and donations from his friends and partners around the world, he has constructed roads in Patle and provided the village with safe drinking water.[5]

One of the dearest projects for Pemba was building a new and safe elementary school for hundreds of children in Patle, called Shree Janata Basic School, providing them with a quality education from first to 8th grade, which is something that Pemba never got the chance to get as a child himself. Pemba is the chairman of the school.[6]
