Or Matias (born December 11, 1987) is a composer, pianist, music director, Music Producer, and content developer.[1] He is best known for his collaborations with Dave Malloy[2][3] and Rachel Chavkin,[4] as well as for his original musical, The Wave.[1]

History

Matias began playing piano at the age of 3 and violin at the age of 5. Upon graduating from high school, he moved to New York City to attend Juilliard School, where he majored in classical piano and received his B.M in 2010.[1][2][5] He received his M.F.A from New York University Tisch School of the Arts in Musical Theatre Writing.[1][2]

During his graduate studies, Matias was recruited by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra to play keyboards and work with their vocalists. In 2012, Matias met musician and composer Dave Malloy, and the two began collaborating on musical theatre productions. In 2013, Matias music-directed and conducted Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, written by Malloy and directed by Rachel Chavkin.[1][2][5][6] The musical received numerous productions before opening on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre in October 2016.[1] The production, starring Josh Groban, was nominated for 12 Tony Awards.[7]

With the same creative team, Matias served as music director and actor for Preludes (musical), for which he was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor.[8][9] Matias additionally music-directed First Daughter Suite at The Public Theater,[10] written by Michael John LaChiusa, and Moby-Dick (2019 musical) at the American Repertory Theater[11] as well as Octet (musical)|Octet at Signature Theatre Company|The Signature Theatre in NYC (both by Dave Malloy).[12] For the latter, Matias was awarded an Obie Award for excellence in music and sound.[13] He also co-produced the cast album, released by Nonesuch Records.[14]

Matias wrote the book, music, lyrics, and orchestrations for an original musical, The Wave. The piece premiered at the Landestheater Linz in 2021.[15] The Wave received 5 Deutscher Musical Theatre Preis awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.[16]

Matias is on faculty at the Manhattan School of Music, where he teaches contemporary musical theatre studies.[9]
