Mona Zohdi Mofid is an American dermatologist[1] and medical researcher specializing in treating skin cancer,[2] primarily melanoma.[3]

Dr. Mona Mofid has served as the medical director of the American Melanoma Foundation for over 15 years and currently is in private practice with offices in La Jolla and Coronado.[4] She is a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.[5]

Dr. Mona Mofid has received several awards, including consistently being chosen “Top Doctor” by the San Diego Medical Society[6][7][8] and her peers as well as Castle Connolly’s America’s Top Doctor award in the Dermatology category for nine consecutive years (2015–2024). She has been recognized with the highest patient satisfaction scores from over 1700 physicians within Sharp Community Medical Group, most notable for her kindness and compassion.

Education

Dr. Mona Mofid attended Louisiana State University, earning both a B.S. in biochemistry and a B.A. in French with a minor in Italian in 1993. She received her M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1997. Upon graduation, she continued her training at TheJohns Hopkins Medical Institutions as an internal medicine intern (1997–1998) and a resident in dermatology (1998–2001).

Career

Mofid started her career in 2001 at the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group. In 2002, she was the executive director of the 79th Atlantic Dermatological Conference afterwards becoming the youngest president of the Maryland Dermatological Society and served in this capacity until 2004.[9]

After her time with the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, Mofid served as a clinical director of the Johns Hopkins Department of Dermatology and as a co-director of Johns Hopkins University’s Melanoma and Pigmented Lesion Clinic. In 2003 and 2004, Mofid also served as the program director for the Johns Hopkins Inaugural Postgraduate Seminars in Dermatology. In 2003, Mofid started as a member of the American Academy of Dermatology State Society Development Task Force.

From 2010 to 2013, Mofid served on the Executive Board of the Combined Health Agencies.

Dr. Mona Mofid currently is in private practice in the San Diego area and affiliated with Sharp Community Medical Group, where she also serves as the co-chair of the Happiness Committee and is a member of the Metro Regional Board of Directors. She also serves as a member of the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention.[10]

Dr. Mona Mofid is a regular contributor to numerous publications including the Times of San Diego and the San Diego Union Tribune.[11] Her insights have been quoted in publications such as The Alpine Sun, Beauty in the Bag, NBC News,[12] and The East County Californian. In her articles, she discusses various skincare practices,[13] preventive measures against skin cancer, debunking myths about skincare, and raising awareness about rising trends such as sunburn art and tattoos and the risks associated with them. Mofid has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and scientific papers and is widely sought-after for lectures internationally.[14]

Dr. Mona Mofid is the co-author of the book Franny and Freddy Get Fried, which is a children’s storybook where she discusses the harmful effects of sun exposure on the skin.

Philanthropy

Dr. Mona Mofid joined the American Melanoma Foundation's board of directors in 2003 and later became the medical director in 2005, a position she has held for over 15 years. As a part of the Farmworker Justice Project, Mofid provides pro bono medical services for migrant farm workers.

In 2023, Mofid received the 100th Guardian Angel Award from Sharp Healthcare for 100 donations in her name to the hospital system. In the same year, Mofid and Jim Reopelle provided funds to an orphanage in Nigeria, which was named "Dr. Mona and Jim Reopelle House of Kindness" in their honor. Mofid has also donated funds to the San Diego Police Department's Walker therapy dog.

  • Mofid has been credited as the “Woman of the Year” by the American Biographical Institute’s Board of International Research in 2007.
  • She has been recognized as one of America’s Top Dermatologists by the Consumer Research Council of America from 2007 to 2021.
  • She has been credited with San Diego’s Top Doctor Award for seven years, including 2010, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021,[15] 2022, and 2023.[16][17][18]
  • Mofid was recognized with the San Diego Union Tribune’s Super Doctor Award in 2010 and 2011.
  • She received the Physician’s Compassionate Care Award and Patient Choice Award from Vitals in 2010–2020 and 2010–2021, respectively.
