Life and work

Defauw was born in Diksmuide, Flanders, on September 22, 1963. Beside being a writer, she teaches mathematics at the Lyceum of Ypres, where she also taught economics for many years.[1][2] Defauw lives with her family in Bovekerke near Koekelare.[1][3][4][5] She also worked for the annual Junior Monsterboeken (Junior Monsterbook).[1][6]

Her De C-brieven ("The C-letters"), her debut book,[7] was released in 2005. It was inspired by her daughter.[1]

In 2017 she published Alle dagen donker ("All Days Dark") based on a true story, about a boy who becomes blind after a fall and after troubles dealing with the situation meets Lily, a blind girl. She wrote the book after meeting with blind people, and after she understood even better the importance of guide dogs for these people, she handed the book's copyright to the Belgium Center for Guide dogs.[8]

In 2018 she published Het robotmeisje ("The Robot Girl"), whose protagonist Timo meets a girl his parents take home, and discovers an underground laboratory.[9][6]

In 2019 she published her seventh novel, In ruil voor paardenballet, telling about a boy having to sell his horse to help his sick sister while also telling about the traditional Spanish Riding School.[1][10]
